"Supernatural" Recap & Review - "Malleus Maleficarum"

Supernatural
"Malleus Maleficarum"

Original Air Date: January 31, 2008

It is Jenny D. with a long awaited new episode of Supernatural. Malleus Maleficarum, what does it mean? Not sure but I think it has something to do with kicking some major witch butt! Because that is exactly what Sam and Dean did on this episode.

Creepy things are happening. A girl chokes to death on her own teeth and a guy almost chokes to death on a wormy sandwich. When Sam and Dean investigate both occurrences, they find a common thread. In both cases, they found a hex bag, in the bathroom of the girl who died and in the guy’s car. They figure out that they are dealing with witches, which does not thrill Dean.

And what better way to disguise a coven of witches in suburbia than a book club. I thought that was pretty ingenious. Put together a bunch of trophy wives in suburbia that apparently are bored enough to start casting spells to make them feel better. When one of the groups dies, the others start to freak out. With what started out as a way to get what they wanted has turned into more than they bargained for.

Sam and Dean show up at Elizabeth’s house, the weak one of the bunch, to question her about what is happening. Before she can say anything, Renee and Tammi, the other 2 witches show up to “help her out”. Sam and Dean leave and as they are on their way out of town, they are stopped by Ruby standing in the middle of the road. She tells them to stay away from this job, that the witches are working for demons and it I after Sam. Dean gets pissed and wants to off Ruby with the Colt, but Sam stops him and Ruby gets away.

They get back to the hotel and have an argument about Ruby when all of a sudden Dean doubles over in pain. Sam can’t find a hex bag, so he immediately leaves with the Colt and heads to take care of the three of them. When he arrives they play dumb. Ruby arrives at the hotel and pours something down Dean’s throat, saving him.

While it is no surprise to me that Tammi stood out to be the leader, I was surprised to find out that she is actually a demon. Sam’s tries to shoot her with the colt, but she deflects the bullet and throws him against the wall. Renee gets upset, so Tammi kills her. The demon reveals that he killed Tammi’s and took over her body and Elizabeth sold her soul to it. Tammi reveals that there is a new leader that intends on eliminating Sam so that there is no competition. Dean busts in to save Sam, but Tammi throws him against the wall as well. Ruby comes in right after and says she wants to talk to Tammi. We find out that Ruby used to be a witch and sold her soul to Tammi. When Ruby tries to stab her with her knife, they begin to fight. Elizabeth in the mean time is preparing a ritual to stop Tammi. She begins to change as black fog comes out of Ruby’s mouth. When Tammi finds out what Elizabeth is doing, she kills her. However, this is just enough for Dean to get free and he filets her with Ruby’s knife. I think he was getting out a little aggression. Ruby tells them to leave and she will clean up the mess.

Ruby and Dean talk later and the real shocker of the season is that Dean will soon become what he has spent his life fighting, a demon. Ruby explains that all demons were human once, that they become demons when they are in hell. They forget their humanity and become demons. She wants to make sure Sam is ready to fight on his own, so she convinces Dean to help her. She cannot save Dean, she only told Sam that so he would help her. She disappears as we see that Dean’s shortening future is beginning to bother him.

I thought it was a great episode. I am happy with what they did with Ruby’s character and how they tied Dean into it. It is too bad that the networks can’t give the writers what they deserve, because this season of Supernatural has been amazing.
