The Smith’s have really gone all out decorating for Christmas. Even Klaus pitched in, getting his little fishbowl into the model train he’s set up to travel around the magically decorated Christmas tree. Roger is drunk on eggnog and visions of sugarplums dance in everyone’s heads. Stan comes home, dressed as Santa and proceeds to shatter everyone’s Christmas spirit. He’s unhappy with the decorations and he goes off on everything from the way the stocking are hung to the look of the three wise men in the nativity scene. He refuses to accept the tree they’ve decorated and drags the family out into the woods to find another one.

The Smith’s have really gone all out decorating for Christmas. Even Klaus pitched in, getting his little fishbowl into the model train he’s set up to travel around the magically decorated Christmas tree. Roger is drunk on eggnog and visions of sugarplums dance in everyone’s heads. Stan comes home, dressed as Santa and proceeds to shatter everyone’s Christmas spirit. He’s unhappy with the decorations and he goes off on everything from the way the stocking are hung to the look of the three wise men in the nativity scene. He refuses to accept the tree they’ve decorated and drags the family out into the woods to find another one.
They search the woods for hours, but everyone is freezing and Stan is annoying everyone with his know-it-all attitude. Eventually, he sends everyone back to wait in the car while he finds the perfect tree himself. He spots the perfect tree up on a high cliff in the moonlight and defies death about two or three times on the way to reach the tree. He makes it to the tree eventually and the falling tree crushes him and he dies.
Stan wakes up in ice cream parlor in heaven. The news about being dead goes down a little easier with ice cream for some reason. Stan is getting the grand tour of heaven, but he demands to be returned to earth to save his family. Turns out, they are all about to freeze to death because he took the keys to the car with him. Nobody just “gets” a second chance though and Stan has to go all Defending Your Life to earn his second chance.
He’s got an angel lawyer, who doesn’t yet have her wings, because she hasn’t won any trials – even though the judge is her father. Things don’t look good for the Smith family this Christmas. They play a bunch of Stan’s memories in court and everyone, including the judge, thinks that not only does Stan not deserve a second chance but he should also be in hell.
Stan pulls his gun on the judge and everyone laughs at him, because earth guns don’t work in heaven. The bailiff grabs Stan, but Stan is fast he was a CIA agent after all. He grabs the bailiff’s heaven gun (which DO work in heaven) and holds his lawyer hostage, sparking a big debate about why they even have heaven guns.
Stan gets into a big shoot out with a bunch of arch-angels and eventually ends up holding the heaven gun to God’s head and demanding to be returned to earth. God tells him no and Stan gives up, leaving the heaven gun on God’s desk. Then God pulls a Willy Wonka (So shines a good deed in a weary world) and the whole thing was just a test. Stan can go back to earth and have his second chance. His lawyer also earned her wings.
Stan is sent back to earth the moment right before he walked into the house and started trashing everyone. He walks in and this time everything looks perfect to Stan and his angel lawyer watches through the window as Stan and his family all embrace. Roger points out that there’s a flying hooker watching them through the window, but then he passes out under the tree and it’s Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight.
