“Love, Bullets and Blacktop”
Original Air Date: November 6, 2007
KP – TwoCents Head Writer
Last week our boys used a meat thermometer as a vessel, Andi and Sam had a big fight and are on rocky ground, and Patton Oswald guest starred. On to this week!
On every channel in the car, we hear Radar Love. It’s this week’s clue. But the immediate mission? Sock is trying to get Sam some lovin’ now that he’s into the ‘friend zone’ with Andi. Sock puts a song on the jukebox and shows us some Socks killer dance moves and the girlies all gather around. Gotta love bachelorette parties. Sam gets a nice kiss from a girl named Taylor (Pascale Hutton – Traveler, Smallville).

The vessel this week is… an 8-track Soundtrack called Love, Bullets and Blacktop. Track number 1 is Radar Love of course. Andi spies the 8-track and offers Sam to come to her house to play it on her Dad’s old 8-track player. Andi overhears Taylor’s cell call to Sam. Awkward! A nice coffee maker steam technique and Sam is transported to meet our friend The Devil on the site of a big train wreck. The cause? A 1973 GTO. Kit and Holly are the souls who stole this 70s car – seeing the path to the 8-track yet?
Benny found a copy of Love, Bullets and Blacktop online and it’s on its way. Another 70s car is involved in a killer crash. They have to go to see Russ (played by the Booger guy from Revenge of the Nerds!) because he is an expert in old cars. The car on the 8-track is a 71 Malibu. Turns out, Russ owns a 71 Mustang he calls Mandy and he tells the boys about a classic car show in Chinatown. Off to Chinatown we go!
In an ode to Say Anything, Sam holds an 8-track player above his head attempting call out to Kit and Holly. And, as fate would have it, they find them, just before they launch themselves off the top of the parking garage. Of course, they get right up and, ala Claire in Heroes, put themselves back together and take off in another 70s car.
Taylor comes in to the Work Bench and asks, of all people, Andi where Sam is. Again, I must say – AWKWARD. Sock takes a picture of Russ’ “Mandy” and puts it online for sale. They need to find Kit and Holly again. Andi urges Sam to call Taylor – YEAH! I don’t buy it! With another transportation, Sam and Devil chat it up in the garden of a church. They talk about lust and love. According to the Devil, “The French invented love so they could put a civilized face on a primal urge.” I like that. The point? The Devil is trying to convince Sam to give into his urges from time to time. The church? Yup, it’s the wedding from last night’s bachelorette party and Taylor is now face to face with Sam, who actually asks her out for a drink tomorrow night.
Sam gets back to the Work Bench just in time to join Sock and Ben who are off to meet with Kit and Holly who are coming to look at the car. Only Kit got out of the car and so, Sam only got him into the 8-track. They have to find Holly now. Luckily the movie arrived, but it’s on BETA! Off to Russ’ 1970 themed home to watch it. Russ, who refers to himself as the Russman, is trying to push all kinds of 1970s drugs on these poor kids. Then Holly crashes her car through the house and demands the Kit filled 8-track. Lucky for Sam, Russ has a lot of 8-tracks lying around and he hands Holly a fake one.
Andi runs into Sam hooking up the Beta machine in the store and shows Sam to her ‘Ted-Free Zone’ in the storage room. Cozy on the couch Sam and Andi watch some of the movie until Andi falls asleep on Sam’s shoulder. Everyone… AWWWWW.
The clue in the movie is for Midnight Autobody. So, the boys head off to a real Midnight Autobody shop. Holly attacks! The 8-track is lost and Ben is down! Sock knocks Holly out for a while, but really, she’s just pissed. As Holly is about to torch Sam, Sock and Ben start to belt out Radar Love! Holly stops long enough for Sam to get the drop on her. He grabs the 8-track and whamo blamo – Holly is back together with Kit and on their way back to Hell.
After celebratory shots with the boys, it’s time for Sam to be on his date with Taylor. She convinces him to be spontaneous and off to the stock room they go, making out all the way. But, it just doesn’t feel right to Sam, it’s not him. He wants to slow it down a little. The Devil is there to say he’s sorry for pushing Taylor on him, and point out that the sound you hear is every man laughing at Sam’s “slow it down” line.
But what’s that? Is the Devil sad he doesn’t know love? Hmmmm...
