All I can say is thank goodness Elliot and JD didn’t kiss. I mean, really, they were turning into Ross and Rachel. And what’s with all the Farrah-hair at Sacred Heart? With that off my chest, here’s the quickie recap.
So they didn’t kiss, but they both came to the conclusion that if they would get that close to ruining what they have with Kim and Keith respectively, there must be something wrong with what they have with Kim and Keith respectively. JD concludes that he is a “self-saboteur” in general so he decides to stop all that, and Elliot realizes that she does not want to marry Keith so she breaks up with him. Yikes!
Enter patient Joe (Kevin Rahm), a very likeable guy with an unknown ailment. As an aside: It always freaks me out to see Kevin Rahm in anything (and he is in just about EVERYTHING) because I went to college with the guy. You’ve come a long way since that Village Inn commercial, man. Back to Scrubs… The unlikely triumvirate of Turk, Cox, and Kelso spend the episode trying to diagnose their new best friend Joe’s illness cause he’s just so darn likeable. Too bad they can’t figure out what the hell is wrong with him. At first they thought it was Lyme Disease, but found no tick marks. Did I mention he was likeable?
Meanwhile, Elliot tries to quell Keith’s anger and JD tries not to sabotage anything. Both find these tasks very hard and wish there was an easier way. Same goes for the brain trust diagnosing Joe. They finally realize the answer is right in front of their collective faces: it is Lyme Disease, the tick marks were just hidden by Joe’s hair. It is the principle of “Occam's Razor” which means a first instinct or assumption is probably the right one.
The wisdom of Occam’s Razor (with a little help from Carla) convinces Elliot that the answer is right in front of her face, too: she needs to let Keith be angry. So Elliot learns to live with the anger of her jilted co-worker, hoping it will subside over time.
The wisdom of Occam’s Razor (with a little help from Turk) convinces JD that the answer is right in front of his face, too: he’s not sabotaging his relationship with Kim because he doesn’t HAVE a relationship with Kim; knocking a girl up on the first date will do that to you. So JD learns to live with the fact that if it were not for the baby, he probably wouldn’t be with Kim. But there is a baby, and JD decides to stick with it.
There it is, kids, the first episode of the last season. It had all the quirkiness I have come to love over the years (the Sacred Heart Who Caresies Awards were awesome!) and some surprises (The Janitor has a girlfriend!), even if the tone at the end was less than happy. My only true disappointment of the episode: no Ted! Where was my favorite little depressed lawyer? Next week: JD becomes a daddy!
