It’s only human to want things you don’t have: freedom from a contract or temptation, a vacation with your boyfriend, a boyfriend period, or a chance with your smokin’ stepsister. This week Sam searches for a soul with answers, Ben piques a demon’s interest, and Sock tries to make Kristin see their relationship his way.

The boys head to a stable on a hunt for a 13th century Mongolian warrior. They mistake a bunny for the soul, and Ben wants to keep it. While the boys argue amongst themselves, the soul steals the vessel (a spear) from Sam until his phone goes off. Figuring modern technology will scare the Mongolian, Sam calls Sock’s phone, but the soul gets angry and spears Sock’s phone. Ben tries to pry the vessel from the ground while holding the rabbit, but the soul heads off on horseback before he can get it out.

Kristin’s tickle fights, wrestling holds, and yoga practice are making brother Sock uncomfortable. Ben is upset at Sam and Sock for assuming his attachment to new pet King Charlie is a result of loneliness and not allowing the bunny indoors. Andi has a run-in with a Work Bench “secret shopper” and warns the others about corporate employees spying on them. It later bites Ted in the behind, and he loses his job for hitting on the secret shopper.

Sam and Andi convince Gladys to speak up about Alan. She’ll come around the house at 8 o’clock shining a light through a window since talking at the DMV isn’t safe. Sam spots the light and runs out to meet her, but a demon attacks him. Ben goes out and burns the demon with a torch, sending it off. The next day, Sam demands Gladys give him Alan’s address because Daddy Devil will come after her and her allies. Gladys grudgingly hands it over.

Sock takes Kristin dancing and drinking, hoping she’ll come around to realizing since they’re not blood-related they can hook up. Topher, a sleazy-looking but fun guy catches Kristin’s attention, and the next day Sock complains to Sam about the guy on their way to meet Ben at a Vietnamese restaurant. Ben thinks the soul will stop by since his pattern of breaking into Chinese and Korean restaurants follows the order the Mongolians took over Asia. Smart boy. The Mongolian shows up in a ruckus and heads for the kitchen. Sam attempts distracting him with his phone again. Not gonna work – Mongolian’s got Bluetooth. They race for the spearhead, Sam wins, and into the vessel the soul goes.

Kristin’s mad at Sock for hitting Topher with a chair for making lewd comments while picking her up for a date, and Sam quickly learns that getting Alan’s help won’t be easy. Devil keeps popping in when Sam’s working on any leads to remind him to catch the soul. Sam finds Alan at his apartment and convinces him to help, when two demons attack Sam and indirectly scare Alan off. The Devil appears, killing one demon and commanding the other to tell its allies to leave Sam alone. Now Alan doesn’t trust him.

The first demon attacker kidnaps Ben and bunny. Ben asks what she wants from him. Turns out girl just wants some lovin’, and she lets him go if he’ll go out with her. Just as his buds take him for dead, he comes home pretending he fought off the demon. Oh, and he says bunny’s staying inside.

Sock gets a call to picks up a tearful Kristin at Topher’s apartment. Hoping to get him in the bedroom, she walked in on him with another girl. She wants to be sexually liberated like her friends and wanted Topher to be her first, but Sock somehow gets her to reconsider and save herself for marriage.

Sam and Andi dig around Alan’s apartment while he’s out. It’s covered with crosses and sticky notes like “Don’t overeat. That’s gluttony” and “Don’t covet neighbors house or wife” to keep him morally in check. Now that they know just how terrified of going back to hell the guy is, they have to figure out where he might be taking sanctuary. A church, maybe? Try graveyard – ground is consecrated, after all.

It might be too early to say two episodes into the season, but I like the direction Reaper’s going. Bounty hunting is taking a back seat to the series’ developing mythology and its characters’ development. I’m quite interested in Alan and what he brings to the storyline. We’re seeing how determined Sam is to get out of his contract with the Devil, yet he’s not about using their family relationship to get what he wants. I think I might be seeing Sam’s potential to inherit hell the Devil saw in last week’s episode. Little by little Sam seems to be subconsciously adapting and using his situation to his advantage, just like the Devil said to at the bar. I had a feeling Alan wouldn’t escape Devil radar for long – his leering smile when he spotted Alan walking off the bus was creepy! Wonder what the Devil’s going to do about it. The way he casually advised Sam to let the Alan lead go doesn’t sit right with me.

Loving Ben this episode. He and Charlie were adorable, but Ben isn’t too much of a softie to let a demon or his friends run him over. He might’ve messed up the first time around, but he still figured out how to find the soul when Sam and Sock were preoccupied with their own issues. Andi was pretty awesome too for pushing after Alan when Sam was ready to give up. Don’t know about Sock and Kristin yet. Sock is a hoot on his own, and Kristen can be adorable if not flighty, but the virginity storyline was awkward especially knowing what Sock wants. It’s a fine lesson to teach. It just feels weird in this show.

What did you think? Give us your two cents. City shops and restaurants need to rebuild after the Mongolian ran amuck.

  2. Thanks for the recap on the Sock/Kristen stuff. I fast-forward through all that, so if anything actually *happens* I miss it. I agree about Sam and the Devil re: "forgetting" Alan. I think it might be possible the Devil is setting Sam up somehow to be the one who can bring Alan back to Hell at the end of the season.
