  1. Ryan starts the show off with the news that 33 million people cast votes for the first round of the Top 13. I begin by wondering how many of those votes were mine, via continuous redial, for Anoop?

But then came the news everyone had been waiting for. No, not who got eliminated, but the new judges’ rule. Here’s how it goes: The judges can vote one time as a panel to save one contestant from elimination if they think America got it wrong. They cited Michael Johns, Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson as examples of contestants who were voted off prematurely. However, if the judges use the save, two contestants have to go home on the next elimination night.

So would the judges use the new rule for Jasmine? They have been touting her from the beginning as a “package artist” (interpretation: she’s pretty) despite her weak vocals. But no, they make her sing to be considered for the save and then tell her it’s a no-go.

Ryan quickly goes through the others, giving them the word that they’re safe. Like we didn’t know that about Alexis Grace, Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta and Lil Rounds. But, after the judges’ harsh comments, I have great concern about Anoop Desai — then it’s a face off between Anoop and Jorge Nunez.

Whew, it’s Jorge who has to sing for the possibility of the save. And we know, as much as the judges like him, they don’t like him enough to give them their one save. Poor guy looks lost as they gave him the news.

But here’s the important thing: Anoop is safe! OK, if he makes another bad song choice next week, he’s probably gone. I think it’s going to come down to the five I mentioned above anyway. But if Anoop survives one more week, he gets to be in the summer American Idol Tour: Coming to a stadium near you.

How awesome was that Ford commercial (words I never expected to type)? I loved how they superimposed the contestant’s faces on buildings. Kelly Clarkson and Kanye West also brought a huge lift to the show.

But how bad was that group Michael Jackson medley? I hope The Gloved One wasn’t watching. It’s obvious that Scott MacIntyre wasn’t, as contestants had to lead him around during the dancing.

What did you think? Did the right two go home? What do you think of next week’s theme: Songs popularized by members of The Grand Ole Opry? Is that just a fancy way of saying Country Week?

  2. Have you heard of Kanye West's new song in American Idol last week? I barely recognized the song because Kanye West's new song, when heard from his CD, does not sound the same when sung by him live.

  3. I'm a born and bred Nashville girl, so maybe it's just my knowledge and experience with the Grand Ole Opry. If they rigidly stick with "songs popularized by members of the Opry," then it should be Old School Country Week. They should be the country songs of old and the old country and western classics, not any of this Carrie Underwood or Taylor Swift stuff or whatever. But again, it depends on how rigidly they stick with that given definition.
