This week's CSI opens with what looks like the showdown of the episode, rather than the dead bodies. The team is patrolling through what looks like a derelict old restaurant kitchen, looking for someone. Someone finds them, however, and Greg is taken hostage. Luckily it's a training exercise and Greg is a-ok.

It looks like the team is going to have a relaxing meal together when Brass calls Catherine and informs her of a multiple homicide. The team travels to the scene where a neighborhood watch captain and a seven-year-old boy were shot dead the middle of the street. The suspects' details are vague, but the team has it covered. The shooters broke into Priscilla Hatcher's house and roughed her and her son Reggie and his cousin Frankie up. Looks like the Hatchers were the targets. Reggie and Frankie are gone, however.

The neighborhood watch captain was a veteran. He managed to get two rounds off before he was gunned down. The little boy's name was Jason, and his father is having trouble giving his body to David for examination. Greg manages to convince him, but it's obvious it takes a lot out of him to do so. Meanwhile, Nick goes into the house and looks at the damage done by the struggle. He removes a hand print from the fallen TV. Ray discovers that evidently Reggie doesn't live with his mother but down the street, the house the suspects' car was parked in front of. No one's home.

A gun shot victim was brought into the hospital but he died before he could be questioned. Catherine prints him and finds out he's Marcus Garfield, a member of the Snake Back gang. She goes back to the lab to help Hodges identify the suspects' car, which they discover is registered to Marcus Garfield, the dead suspect. Riley discovers that there were no gun casings inside the Hatcher's house, which means the suspects didn't actually want to kill Frankie and Reggie or they would have done it there.

Brass finds a body in a car belonging to Aaron Sweets, another member of the Snake Back gang. Fortunately, it's not Frankie or Reggie. It's... Aaron Sweets. Bummer for him. Guess he didn't know he was driving his coffin off the car lot. Doc Robbins discovers that Sweets died before the shootout with a gun uninvolved in that crime. He wasn't involved. Or at least not directly

Aaron Sweets called Reggie six times in the past few days. That's the connection between valedictorian Reggie and the Snake Back gang! Ray and Riley go back to check Reggie's house again. The only unusual thing they find is that they can't find a phone. They call his home phone number and the phone rings in the closet, or rather a secret basement room in a closet. They head down there and discover some sort of chemical lab, a PCP lab it seems. It looks like Reggie has been pushing drugs on the Snake Back's turf.

Greg goes to talk to Jason's father - he's obviously emotionally connected to this guy's situation. While in the neighborhood, Ray and Riley are checking Reggie's "manufacturing plant." He was making high-grade stuff. Suddenly Ray finds blood that's still wet, and a young man bursts out from a door, holding a gun. Another guy is behind him, bleeding. The one with the gun threatens Riley and Ray and gets them to sit down. But it sounds like Greg is about to walk in on things. Riley goes to calm him down and uses that neat name switching trick to alert him that there's a problem.

Frankie is the one with the gun, and Reggie is the one that's hurt. Ray offers to help Reggie but Frankie's pretty skittish. Ray gets Reggie to lie down so he can look at the massive piece of glass in his shoulder. He also tells Frankie that he and Reggie are having a reaction to the chemicals in the room and that they all need to leave. Reggie wants him to let them help him, but Frankie goes crazy, telling Reggie that while he might book smart, he's not street smart like him. After awhile Reggie gets pretty bad so Frankie says he can help him. Ray gets together what he needs to fix Reggie and Riley goes to seal up the bottles of chemicals. She touches her radio and Frankie goes berserk, slashing Riley across the face. She let's the radio stay on so the team can hear what's going on.

Riley cleverly drops hints as to what's going on so the team can hear, such as that Reggie's carrying a .22 (what killed Sweets). Frankie confesses to killing Sweets but says it won't matter because he's only 14 and they won't execute him. Meanwhile, a news chopper is circling outside, and Frankie goes crazy, smashing the radio. The phone starts ringing.

Frankie won't let them answer the phone. He's cracking under the pressure as Ray demands that they go to the hospital and Reggie starts to get dizzy. Riley offers to get her first aid kit from the truck but Frankie refuses. Finally he agrees, but Ray has to stay down. Riley goes to get the kit and Nick talks to her, hiding behind a nearby car so the camera trained outside won't catch him. She gives him some more details silently and returns with the kit. Riley assists Ray with removing the glass from Frankie's shoulder. When Ray removes the glass, blood spurts from an artery, distracting Frankie and allowing Riley to pull a gun on Frankie. He gives up his gun and goes to help Ray with Reggie.

Another job well done for the CSIs. They get Reggie to the hospital and take Frankie into custody. Ray is obviously concerned for Frankie's wellbeing, saying he doesn't have to be another "lost cause."

I am surprised how quickly I have adjusted to the newer team. As a long time CSI fan, I never thought I could forgive them for the loss of Grissom and Warrick (I was never a Sarah fan). But I find myself loving Riley and Ray, especially Ray. He has an inexperience that is real for his character, but also a wisdom and compassion that I think the other characters fall short of sometimes. So thank you, CSI, for creating more characters for me to love.
