Did your DVR cut off the last five minutes of American Idol? Could you hear the screams from my house as they were about to make the final selection — and the screen went blank? I can’t believe I missed the whole “we’re going to have 13 finalists” moment. All thanks to yet another round of Tatiana the Terrible’s crying.

Thank God for YouTube.

  1. Did your DVR cut off the last five minutes of American Idol? Could you hear the screams from my house as they were about to make the final selection — and the screen went blank? Thank God for YouTube.

So the judges picked Jasmine Murray, Megan Joy Corkrey, Matt Giraud and the surprised 13th contestant Anoop Desai to go to finals. The only thing that surprises me is that Matt got the silver stool, not Ricky Braddy. And not because I think Ricky is more talented, it’s just that Paula has been playing him up as the second coming of Jesus since the beginning of the season.

Here’s a quick look at how each did in the Wild Card round.

Jesse Langseth: Tell Me Something Good
I liked the song choice and she gave it so much soul. Randy didn’t like the choice and thought she was “just alright, not great.” Kara told her she had “swagger,” while Paula was impressed by Jesse’s determination. Simon thought she was “a lot better than we saw they first time,” but “the song and the performance was indulgent.”

    Matt Giraud: Who’s Loving You
Strange that he’d pick a Jackson 5 song and the hat and scarf are way too much. Kara thanked him for bringing back the blues. Paula thought it was the song was in right zone for him. Simon said he was a billion times better than last week, but hated what he wore. Randy said Matt gave the other contestants “a run for the money.”

Megan Joy Corkrey: Black Horse and A Cherry Tree
She’s a little less jerky, but not on pitch, especially the last note. Paula thought she’d picked a song that suited her. Simon said he liked her and she’s current. Randy pointed out it wasn’t her best vocal, but the song was in her range. Kara said she gives variety and something different to the mix.

Von Smith: Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word
Although he starts soft, he is still shouting at the end. Simon says he’s becoming a bit boring. Randy points out that at the beginning, Von wasn’t hitting the notes. Kara says he has great vocal ability but hasn’t found his style yet. Paula believes he’s thinking too hard but is a brilliant singer.

    Jasmine Murray: Reflection (from Mulan)
This song has been done to death on this show, including by Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks. She has a great dress and sings sweetly. Randy thinks the song is too big for her. Kara didn’t know she had that big of a voice. Paula said even though some notes were off, she did a wonderful job. Simon thought is she’s pretty special and her “very brave song choice” puts her in the running.

    Ricky Braddy: Superstition
It’s a little too low for him. He’s still so forgettable for me. Kara said he could sing his butt off, but wouldn’t have picked that song. Paula thought he nailed it and had fun. Simon said he sounded good but the performance was a bit karaoke. Randy thinks he has a voice, but the song was self indulgent.

Tatiana del Toro: Saving All My Love for You
She has a better dress this time and shows she can do the big notes. Paula said: “You grew an accent I’ve never heard before.” Simon pointed out that they’d heard her do that song three times and it was “rubbish” that she couldn’t pick another song. Randy said she was a mixed bag of good and bad moments. Kara wondered who she was (don’t we all!).

    Anoop Desai: My Prerogative
Hits the money note great and he’s a hot dancer. I’m a big fan and have my fingers crossed. Simon thinks he’s not the best singer but people like him. Randy notes that Anoop had sung the song in Hollywood Week, but that’s OK because this time he “slayed it.” Kara wanted to get up and dance. Paula (who did get up and dance) emphasized his showmanship.

I thought Jesse was better than the other two women selected, but in each case, those women bring a stronger personality to the table. Megan especially has the potential to be this year’s Brooke White.

How painful was it to watch Tatiana break down again? How awkward was it to hear Ryan say she could say on her knees (ewww)? Were you surprised at the judges adding a 13th finalist? How much of the show do you think was scripted even before the contestants got a note out? Who is your favorite of the Top 13?

  2. My DVR cut out, too! Yikes!

And I am SO VERY GLAD Tatiana is gone! I mean, yes - she made for some good TV, but MY WORD she was a complete wack-a-doo!
