Then Simon drew a crayon mustache on her that kept Allison Iraheta laughing so hard that the 16-year-old singer couldn’t hear the criticism they gave her (it was mostly good).

Last night, judges were almost more amusing to watch than the singers. Paula got out a coloring book for Simon, noting his immaturity (tell me that joke wasn’t setup). Then Simon drew a crayon mustache on her that keep Allison Iraheta laughing so hard that the 16-year-old singer couldn’t hear the criticism they gave her (it was mostly good).
Then there’s music legend Smokey Robinson who served the guest mentor. Except for a few times, his critiques were so cream puff that he out-Paula-ed Paula.
MATT GIRAUD: Let’s Get It On
It’s nice, very bluesy, but a little karaoke except for the added runs.
Randy says he set it on fire, while Kara thought he got the girls panting and it was a solid performance. Paula sys he showed his sexy, cool vibe, although he overdid the riffs. Simon thinks it’s a brilliant song choice and called him one of the frontrunners in the competition.
KRIS ALLEN: How Sweet It Is
He’s back with his guitar and mixes the song up a bit. It sounds fresh, but the rhythm seemed off a few times.
Kara says he didn’t do James Taylor of Marvin Gaye, but he did Kris. Paula says he’s coming into his own. Simon thinks he ought to have more swagger but it did a good job making the song his own. Randy says he’s very consistent.
SCOTT MACINTYRE: You Can’t Hurry Love
It’s not bad, the up tempo means he’s hitting more notes.
Paula thinks he brings something different to the show while Simon says it wasn’t a great version of the song and sounds like honkey tonk piano. Randy says it was a hotel type of performance and urged him to take risks. Kara liked the up tempo, but warned him about tampering with the melody of a classic tune.
MEGAN JOY: Once in My Life
She’s not in tune, she’s screechy and her clothes look like she picked them out of a rag bag.
Randy calls it a train wrecks. Kara says she had bad notes and phrasing. Paula thinks the song had notes too high and too low for her. Simon tells her it was horrible and she could be in serious trouble.
ANOOP DESAI: Oh Baby, Baby
It’s a little sleepy, but his voice sounds great. He seems to realize that people like him singing ballads.
Kara thinks he did well with a hard song while Paula praises his phrasing, delivery and sweetness. Simon says it was a great vocal, but he needs to up his showmanship. Randy wants more energy to add to the great vocal.
MICHAEL SARVER: Too Proud to Beg
Wow, he is so off key and loses the melody.
Paula compares it to a Las Vegas cat and Simon couldn’t wait for it to end. Randy thinks the song is too big for him and Kara says they’re looking for an artist and he doesn’t fit the bill.
LIL ROUNDS: Heat Wave
Dressed in the period with a gorgeous wig, she sings well if not adding anything new.
Randy says she has crazy vocals, but the front of the song was torture for him because she rushed through. Kara didn’t think it was the right song for her, but Paula disagrees and calls her fresh. Simon gets that she’s doing a trubute to Motown, but it didn’t give her a moment and she’s one of the best singers in the competition.
ADAM LAMBERT: Tracks of My Tears
One of the best Idol performances ever. He comes out with no makeup, hair slicked back and in a suit and sings the song in a pure head voice. Even Smokey stands.
Kara (standing) says it’s one of the best vocals tonight ad he’s awesome. Paula thinks he’s in his own league and has played the element of surprise. Simon says it was the best vocal of the night and tells him “tonight you emerged as a star.” Randy showed he was more than a cool indie rocker and he’s unbelievably hot.
DANNY GOKEY: Get Ready
It’s energetic, but doesn’t show us anything new about him. He really shouldn’t be allowed to dance.
Paula says he’s “undefinable, dependable and always reliable.” Simon thinks it’s clumsy and amateurish. Randy says it wasn’t his best performance but he loved it. Kara says it was good, but not great, still she’s “still a huge Danny fan.”
ALLISON IRAHETAL: Papa Was a Rolling Stone
She has such an amazing voice and such maturity.
Randy calls her one of the dopest singers this season. Kara asks why America isn’t voting for her because he voice is from God and you can’t teach that. Paula thinks she kept her rocker edge and she’s amazing. Simon says it was one of the best performances.
Adam certainly was heads and shoulders above everyone, but there were a few stragglers — Michael, Scott and Megan. Which one to do think will go? Who do you want to stay?
