This week our friend Bear Grylls will be traveling to Transylvania. I don’t know if he’ll be visiting any castles while he’s there, but I’m more spooked at the thought of what he’ll be eating this week.

In a very clever beginning, Bear is whisked away by a rope that’s tied to a helicopter. He is dangling below the copter over the Carpathian Mountains in Romania where he’ll be spending the next day or two. He gets dropped down into the deep forest and wants to make his way east toward the Danube Delta.

Ok, so when I made the terrible joke in the prologue about what Bear eats, I never thought he’d gross me out too bad. But 5 minutes into the episode he finds himself digging through bear poop! He pulls out fruit that had passed quickly through a bear and rinses it before he eats it. He reminds us that it will help you survive if you needed it. It was a tough scene to watch for sure.

Speaking of bears, he tells us that there are 6000 bears in Romania. He is being very careful where he travels. If the fruit from the bear poop wasn’t enough, he eats a sticky snail and it obviously disturbed him. And if HE’S disturbed, what would that do for us? Right after, he sees a brown bear in a tense moment. He needs to find a very safe shelter for the night. He finds a nice place to set up camp on a ledge. He sets up a tripwire just in case a bear decides to check out his camp. He uses the rope and his cup with some rocks to create it. Then he makes a fire and a small spear just in case a bear or other animal makes its way up to him.

After making it through a nerve-racking evening he continues to the east. He runs into a very steep cliff that is his first obstacle to the delta. He makes a hook with a strong branch that he finds by the cliffside. He shows us the technique called “the cross-arm repel” which has him slinging the rope around both of his arms and he shimmies down. He runs out of rope and has to use his homemade hook to help him down the rest of the way.

Down in the ravine, Bear finds a cave to explore. He thinks that this may be way to make it to safety. He believes that cutting underneath the mountain through the cave will cut miles off of his travels. He makes a torch and makes his way in. He marches through water following it along to what he hopes is the other side. At points, the cave really closes in on him and it is truly scary to watch. At one point, the roof gets so low he needs to swim underwater to get past the rock. The crew follows him to an air pocket in the dark, and then to an opening to the surface,

He gets to a brook and shows a trick to catch trout by putting his hands under rocks that they lurk under. He catches one and eats it raw on the spot. Later he runs into his next obstacle, another cliff to repel. He ties up to a tree and creates a makeshift harness with a piece of rope and his rucksack. There isn’t enough rope to make it to the bottom. He swings over and back up to the top and has to cut his rope away. Fortunately he finds a different way to descend the cliff, where he finds a river. He hears gunshots and knows that people are near. He does a spectacular backflip into the water below.

I was looking forward to this episode. I love the idea of Bear going to Transylvania. The scenes in the cave were by far the best to me. It was really frightening to see him go into the unknown like that, particularly the underwater sequence. And eating the fruit from the bear poop may have been the toughest for me to watch to date. He’s had some bad meals, but that was a difficult one to watch. What do you think was the ugliest meal that Bear’s eaten? Your two cents is always welcome.

  2. Wait a minute... BEAR got disturbed my something he ate? Are you kidding me? That is NOT good!

And I think every meal that he has eaten on the show has been nasty... but then again, I get grossed out if the milk is one hour past expiration.

  3. I completely understand what you're saying, Rachel. I just started eating Chicken Parmsean 2 years ago because I didn't like to mix sauce with chicken. So when he eats spiders and bear poop... that's just another level.
