I hate to say it, but Heroes has not convinced me that it’s back in rare form. I had high hopes; I always have high hopes. But after promising that we’d get answers about whether Bennet is a good guy or a bad guy, we still don’t really know much else. Here’s what happened:
ReplyDeleteMatt, Mohinder, and Peter drugged Noah (I still don’t understand how) and dragged him to a hotel room for an interrogation. Via Matt and his mind reading ability, we’re treated to a series of black and white flashbacks starting with five weeks ago. Our favorite horn rimmed dad meets with Angela Petrelli and she gives him a pension package complete with retirement benefits and a gold watch. He says that he’ll have no idea what to do now that he’s retired, and Angela advises him to just keep his daughter safe. A week later, he’s enjoying a crossword puzzle at home and trying to adapt to the life of a regular guy when Nathan shows up on his doorstep. He explains the plan; that he’d be rounding up people with abilities and holding them long enough to figure out a way to strip the powers away. His logic is that someone injected him with his powers, so surely there’s a way to get rid of them. (Really? Did he not learn his lesson when it comes to formulas?) In exchange for Claire’s safety, Nathan wants Noah in. Of course, Noah agrees. Later, he tries to tell Mohinder about Nathan’s plan, but the cabbie doesn’t believe a word of it, and fails to tell anyone of his meeting with Bennet.
When he meets his new boss, Danko, Noah tries to set his own ground rules starting with ‘one of us, one of them’. His ideas are easily dismissed and it becomes clear that Danko has his own ideas about what’s going to happen. He’s ruthless and doesn’t care about the safety of any of the people with abilities; he can only see the mission in front of him. Showing up at Danko’s door, Noah supplies booze and tries to get to know his boss. It’s clear that there’s no trust on either side, and Noah is considered compromised because of Claire. Not only is Bennet on surveillance, Nathan is too.
Matt gives Peter the location of a storage facility that holds weapons and cash that he grabbed from Noah’s thoughts. While Peter is there, Danko picks him up on camera and eventually a team tracks down the hotel where Bennet is being held hostage. Unfortunately they don’t know the room number. Meanwhile, Peter flies to Danko’s house and their confrontation is picked up by Nathan’s men. Flying to stop a homicide, Nathan implores Peter to understand that if he kills anyone, he’ll be proving the point that heroes are dangerous. Discouraged, Peter shoots Danko in the arm before he flies back to the hotel while Mohinder distracts the men outside who have finally arrived to take them into custody. Matt delves deep into Bennet’s mind one more time because as it turns out, Daphne is alive. When he finally surrenders, Matt is saved by Peter who flies them away. Mohinder, meanwhile, was thrown under the bus and is now chained up at Building 26. Nathan informs him that unless everyone starts cooperating, Daphne will be the first to die, then people with abilities will start being executed.
I’m not sure what it was about this episode. On the one hand, we know that Noah was recruited by Nathan and agrees now with Danko that Nathan’s judgment is clouded by Peter. On the other, as we saw at the end of the episode, Noah has been talking with Angela and confides in her that he doesn’t mind playing the morally gray character in the operation. So like I said, we still don’t know much about Bennet. Is he doomed to play both sides of the field forever? Why were the memories in black and white? Is it because Matt sees memories in black and white? After today’s episodes, I’ve decided that ‘Rebel’ is more than likely Angela Petrelli, but I could be wrong about that. (I believe that some of you thought that after last week’s episode, but it took this one to seal the deal for me.)

Good heavens! I yelled at the TV a lot while watching this one... I'm about ready to breakup with Heroes. Aaarg!
ReplyDeleteI would like to break up with Heroes, bit it-urghhhh-- keeps pulling me back in with the hope it will be better when the Bryan Fuller episodes begin...
