Tyra ditches a wisdom-toothless Landry to make goo goo eyes at a rodeo cowboy named Ty. I’m totally okay with this because the Landry Tyra thing grew old – fast. Problem is in typical Tyra-fashion her choice of a mate already has red flags all over him. He eats drugs he calls “Cowboy Candy” for one. Then Tyra lies to Landry about why she didn’t go play Florence Nightingale. When she gets caught and Landry confronts her its dramatic and kinda awesome in its angst.

  1. Buddy is a total jerk. Seriously. He takes it upon himself to show up at the football field and have it measured for the jumbotron. Tami is furious and even more so when she finds out he also played golf with one of the guys who will be a judge in the Jumbotron hearing. JD’s mom Katie tells Tami that “Nobody likes an angry woman” and she should use her womanly assets to persuade the judges. Tami tries but she comes across as a panicked and angry woman. She finally realizes she’s losing the battle. But Eric tells her it wasn’t a mistake to fight for what was right.

Both Matt and Coach Taylor are stressed out about which QB to start in the next game. Matt wants it to be him and Eric wants it to be him but... JD’s talent can’t be ignored. It’s actually driving Eric to drink. It’s either that or Tami’s incessant blathering about her Principal problems. Come on Tami – whine goes with cheese, not football.

Matt’s mom is back in town and decides to offer to help Matt with grandma. But when she takes Grandma to a doctor’s appointment Grandma makes it clear she hates Matt’s mom Shelby. Shelby then tries to bring them groceries at which point Julie gets to meet her. I totally expected her to say “I thought you were dead?” because hello, didn’t we all think Matt’s mom was dead? Anyway Matt tells her not to come around or help anymore. It’s Grandma who actually comes to Shelby’s defense in the end and asks Matt not to be so hard on her. When Matt and Shelby talk it out we realize she’s actually pretty cool. Matt realizes it too. It’s a totally awesome moment.

As if Coach T doesn’t have enough on his plate he takes Smash to his walk-on for Texas A&M. When the coach tries to reschedule the walk-on Eric storms the field and gets Smash his try-out. Smash does what he does best – he owns the field, the game, everything. And when he gets that call offering him a spot on the team and a position in the 2009 Freshman class I cried. He was my least favorite character in this show and yet my heart swelled and I cried tears of joy. Go Smash!

We end the episode with Landry, Matt, Tim and Smash playing around on the football field before they drive Smash off to college. It’s perfect. It’s awesome. It’s what makes this show so freaking great! Good job Katims and team. This episode was a touchdown!

    Best Dialogue this Friday Night:

Smash to Coach Taylor: “I wanted to stop by and say thank you. I couldn’t have done any of this without you. And that’s for real.”

Do you want Smash to make a future appearance in another episode? Did you miss Tim and Lyla this episode? Should Matt or JD be the QB1? Leave your TwoCents in the comments!
