Finally, Nick Mitchell, AKA Norman Gentle, is gone. The comic who occasionally sings made it much further in the competition than he frankly had a right to. Yes, he was funny. At times. He could almost sing well too. But he never was a serious contender. And knowing how much Simon loathes him, I don’t think there’s any chance he’ll be back for the Wild Card Round.

It’s my husband’s theory that Nick is just gunning for a TV show and used American Idol as a platform to get there. And, darn it, it might just work.

As for the rest of the show, there were some pleasant surprises. First, hey — that group number, Ne-Yo’s “Closer,” wasn’t too bad. A first for American Idol. We also got Brooke White from last season singing “Hold Up My Heart, “a song she wrote from her new album. Good to see her back at the piano and singing (and it shows you how deep last year’s talent pool was if so many of the Top 12 are releasing recordings with labels).

But I have to ding the show for showing a montage they used from the beginning of the year. We all know “it got such a popular response, so we thought we’d play it again” really means “we have to fill airtime and this was free.”

Let’s see how I did on my predictions. I said: Adam Lambert (duh), Kris Allen and Jesse Langseth. But Megan Joy Corkrey shouldn’t be counted out of the equation.

Well, I got two out of three. Jesse didn’t make it while Allison Iraheta did. I think they were equal in talent. The 16-year-old Allison just has a more powerful voice while Jesse has that smoky tinge to hers. I’m fine with the substitution.

And while I hoped for Kris, I wasn’t super confident. My theory was that Matt Giraud had just as much of a chance and he’s had much more camera time. One of the spoiler sites even had him down as sure thing. Hah!

So we say good-bye (for now) to Jasmine Murray, Matt Giraud, Jeanine “The Legs” Vailes, Nick Mitchell, , Megan Joy Corkrey, Matt Breitzke (AKA The Welder), Kai Kalama, Jesse Langseth and Mishavonna Henson.

My guess is we might see Jasmine, Matt and Megan back for the Wild Card.

A few other moments of the broadcast that tickled my funny bone. Both Paula and Kara giving Simon a hard time for not letting them speak (although Kara does rattle on and on). Seeing Paula and Simon High 5 when Kris made the Top 12. And Ryan, who is rarely intentionally funny, saying that we were down to the last three contestants: Adam Lambert, Nick Mitchell and Norman Gentle. (Get it? Nick and Norman were the same person. OK, it sounds lamer when explained).

So now we’re halfway to the Top 12.

So what do you think? Did the right three get chosen? Is there someone you are hoping gets to go to the Wild Card Round? Is Nick Mitchell gone for good? Or should he be asked back? It’s your turn to sound off…
