  1. Tonight we start with a murder-less opening, but not without a crime. A man sneaks up to steal a bicycle and during his getaway hits a pothole. Natalie and Monk happen to be in the area, and Natalie helps the guy get “his” bike back together. She soon realizes what’s happened when the rightful owner comes out running to retrieve the bike.

Natalie and Monk enter into Betavegatech where the owner of the bike, Dr. Berry is working. His lab studies agriculture and looks to create new ways of “saving the world”. Natalie swears that she will find his stolen bicycle, even going as far as calling in Stottlemeyer. The Captain has better things to do with his time, so she cashes in her “karma chips” to get Adrian to help her find it. Later they discover that the thief is John Kuramoto and he’s normally an auto thief. They don’t know why he’s stealing bikes. They go to his house and Monk knocks on the door. First there is no answer, until all of a sudden gunshots fire at them and Monk gets hit in the leg!

Later in the hospital Natalie is apologizing to Monk for getting him into this. She thinks that telling him that he has an even 100 stitches might make him feel better. She also tells him that Stottlemeyer has the whole police force out looking for Kuramoto. Elsewhere Stottlemeyer and Disher have Kuramoto’s cousin in for questioning. He gives up that John was given $3000 to steal the bike. He doesn’t know why.

The gang heads out to see Dr. Berry to see if there was a significance to his bicycle, and why someone would pay Kuramoto for stealing it. Dr. Berry tells them the bike was a gift from The Visionary Club. They don’t know who they are or why they would do that. Later that evening Kuramoto shows up at a graveyard to meet a mystery female for an exchange. She throws him some money and he gives her his backpack. She asks him for his gun so she can hide it from being traced. After he does, she shoots him in the back. And the mystery lady happens to be Dr. Berry’s assistant!

Stottlemeyer and Disher go to meet a garbage man who found the missing bike at the bottom of a dumpster. They determine that the bike was dumped shortly after it was stolen, meaning that whatever is happening is not about the bike. Meanwhile, Dr Berry is discovering that whatever experiment he was working on wasn’t getting the results he expected in front of some investors. Soon he and his assistant hear the ringing of a bicycle bell. Natalie then comes wheeling in with the bike, much to the chagrin of the assistant.

As she and Monk are leaving, Berry mentions in passing that he locked the bike… and this perked up Monk who instantly solves the mystery. The bike was actually given to him by his assistant under a false name with the purpose to give him a special lock for it. This lock matches the type of lock on Dr. Berry’s cooler with special seeds inside. These seeds would garner some good money! The assistant had the bike stolen so she could retrieve the combination for it, since Berry was not good at remembering more than one number. Her eco-friendly shoes were a match for the prints found at the site of the murder. The assistant tries to run, but Natalie catches her before she can get away, but not without shooting Adrian’s good leg first. Monk ends up in the hospital again, but this time with two bad legs. Monk wants his karma chips back.

I thought this was a more light hearted episode, and certainly emotional with the connection and love that Natalie showed for Adrian, even though he was being unpleasant. I really like how close that they have become since she replaced Sharona a few years back. Who do you think is Monk’s best assistant.. Natalie or Sharona?
