Tonight Bear Grylls will be heading into Oregon and Idaho to make his way out of Hell’s Canyon. I think it may be appropriate to use the word “Hell” as a prefix to any or all of his adventures.

Tonight Bear Grylls will be heading into Oregon and Idaho to make his way out of Hell’s Canyon. I think it may be appropriate to use the word “Hell” as a prefix to any or all of his adventures.
Bear gets dropped onto a mountain from a helicopter on the Idaho side of the canyon. He trudges through new snow and tells us that high snow will half the time of travel by foot. He starts to get below the snow line and has to maneuver his way on these terrace steps down the side of the mountain and has to cut off a long stick to help him down. He finds a deer carcass that has rotted, but he shows us how you can stay alive by eating it’s bone marrow. (Um, ew?)He gets to a river as his first obstacle. He uses his stick to vault over it successfully.
Bear makes his way to the very large Snake River. He decides that the best plan of action is to travel down river to find a better crossing point, because there is a steep cliff-side on the other side of the river. He makes one of his commonly used floatation devices using his pack and clothes to move down river. He battles some whitecaps to make it to the other side where the grounds will be easier to pass. Now he needs to find a place to make camp.
Before the sun sets, he climbs a pine to get some kindling to make a fire. He then finds a small cut in of a rock to be able to sleep in. He builds a wall of tree braches to cover the opening. He builds a fire and cuts a three-prong branch into a harpoon for fish. Then he makes a torch and goes out at night to fish in these shallow pools. This scene offers some beautiful shots. He catches one and cooks it up for a late dinner.
The next day he boils some water and has a fish head for breakfast. (And I thought my French Toast Sticks were bad for me). He starts his climb back up the other side of the canyon, heading to the Oregon side. He gets back up through the snow line and it slows down his progress. He makes it to a frozen lake and shows us the best way to cross it. He slides his pack in front of him and crawls across the top of the ice. At the other side the ice breaks and Bear falls in! He has only a short time to prevent hypothermia. He climbs up the side of the mountain and builds a quick fire. He removes his clothes and sits down to warm up. Later he starts his climb further up the mountain where the ridges are much deeper. He makes an impressive climb up through the snowy rocks without any gear to get to the top.
Just as soon as he gets to the top of this mountain, he has to go down the other side. So he turns his pack into makeshift toboggan to slide down. Then he ends up in the green again. He gets to a stream and finds some mussels to eat. He breaks open the middle of a log to get to some dry wood to cook them. He draws some sap from a tree that will be a good kindling to start the fire. He finally has a meal that he enjoys here in the mussels. Then he shows us how to spot a sign of humanity. He finds a trail where people have walked and follows it to a tent in the distance to safety.
Every time Bear finds himself in a cold climate, I always hope that a warm or hot climate next. I thought that some of the shots in the dark while he was fishing were very cool. And it’s another example of Bear and the producers to find new and interesting ways to entertain and educate in similar climates. What do you think about this? And, are you as cold as I am right now? I think I need to build a fire now.
