This week’s episode opened with Desmond frantically running through a marketplace, where he asks a man “are you the doctor?” The part of my brain that is devoted exclusively to Doctor Who freaked out a little, but what freaked me out more was the fact that the doctor was for Penny, who was in labor. After about thirty seconds, she gives birth. We learn this is a flashback when we see Desmond telling his son, who looks to be about two, about an island he never thought he’d return to. It’s Great Britain. Needless to say, “Jughead” was the trippiest episode of the season so far.

Back on another far more mysterious island, the still-adorable Daniel Faraday asks Charlotte how she’s feeling. Aside from the dizziness, double vision and headache, she’s fine, but he still refuses to tell her what’s happening. When they reach the creek where they’re supposed to meet Juliet, Locke and Sawyer, a bomb goes off and several Others who are following them are killed. They are captured by a hot Other who’s with some of the men who shot arrows at the camp in the last episode. It’s not looking good for Desmond either, who’s on Penny’s bad side for going through with Faraday’s request. In a rather foreboding scene, she makes Desmond promise never to go back to the island. He responds with “why would I want to do that?” Well, someone certainly does.

Sawyer and Juliet managed to capture two of the Others, who are speaking Latin. Luckily, our still-braless Jill-of-all-trades does too, since she was an Other. (Remind me why the hell we’re supposed to trust her again?) While she’s showing off her nifty Latin skills, Miles, Faraday and Charlotte are being taken to the Others’ camp. Miles freaks out because they’ve just walked over a fresh grave and he knows how the men have died. They were US military, something we should probably keep in mind for the future. Just saying. The hot Other brings them to the camp, where they run into Locke’s BFF Richard “sexy eyeliner” Alpert, who says they’ve come back for their bomb. Um, WHAT?

Meanwhile, Desmond attempts to be stealthy at Oxford by wearing a scarf and sunglasses, which is about as effective of a disguise as Christian Bale’s Batman voice. He asks where Daniel is, but is told there’s never been anyone named Faraday there. Immediately I started thinking, “does Daniel have an alias? Like the show Alias? That’s a show about a spy, is Daniel a spy?”

I soon realized I was probably wrong, when Desmond is caught breaking into the physics lab (smooth move, Batman), finds Daniel’s rat maze (where Daniel’s mouse Eloise lived, which is also Mrs. Hawking’s first name), and is caught by a man who tells him there’s no record of Faraday because of what Faraday did. He was apparently trying to send rats’ brains back in time, and the school pretty much purged (I should warn you now, I am like a ninja of puns) all record of him because of “what he did to that poor girl.” Dun dun duuuunnn…

On the island, Faraday has rolled his shirt sleeves even higher and tells Charlotte and Miles to keep letting Alpert think they’re with the military. Daniel sees radiation burns and figures out that there’s a bomb, and asks Richard to let him fix it, saying he won’t put anyone in danger because he loves Charlotte. I have yet to ascertain why. Back in the jungle, Juliet tells the two Others to take them to the camp to see Richard. One of them escapes, but Locke won’t shoot because he’s “one of my people.”

Hmmm, Locke seems to be taking this job as future leader of the Others really, really seriously. While Locke is being flaky, Desmond puts on a hat and goes to find Teresa Spencer, a woman Daniel knew. Her sister answers, and as soon as Desmond tells her about Daniel, she shows him Teresa, who is basically a vegetable. Her sister tells him that Charles Widmore, the man who was funding Faraday’s research, has been taking care of Teresa. Desmond goes to see Widmore, who tells him to “deliver his message, and then get Penny out of danger.” Guess where Faraday’s mother is? In LA. I called it.

After this bombshell, Richard is busy telling Juliet that he answers to someone too, but is interrupted by the Other who escaped from Locke. Of course, Locke tracks him. Faraday is led to the bomb by the hot Other. The bomb is huge, and Faraday wants it to be buried. Sawyer and Juliet catch up to them and frees Faraday.

When Locke comes into the camp, Richard has no idea who he is. An Other is pointing a gun at Locke, and it turns out it’s young Charles Widmore. Locke is sort of glad to meet him, whereas I would have just punched him. Desmond goes back to Penny and his son Charlie, which is freaking adorable in itself, and tells Penny that Faraday’s mother is dead. She spots the lie, and they’re off to LA. In our final scene of the episode, Locke tells Richard when and where he’ll be born so Alpert can visit him, but before Alpert can tell him how to get off the island, there’s a flash. Charlotte’s nose starts bleeding again.

I loved this episode. I’m a big fan of time travel when done right, and I think Lost is pulling it off so far. I can’t wait for Desmond and Penny to get to LA, where they’ll hopefully run into the lovely Ben Linus, who has a special treat in store for Penny. I did not miss the Oceanic Six at all. It was nice to have a break from Kate’s one facial expression and Jack’s emo-ness. What did you guys think? Leave your Two Cents in the comments below!

That is the best thing you have ever written.

I can't wait until Desmond and family get to LA, although I could do with another couple episodes without the six. I just want a Ben and Penny interaction so much!

  3. Fantastic Batman reference, luv :D I also did a little squee dance when Des asked for "the Doctor", and my next thought was "ooh, next regeneration went bad" but I'm a huge geek. And it WAS great to get away from Beardy and the Beast for a while. But I missed Benry!

Great way to catch up, considering I was lost (lolanotherpun) in an ongoing post at the time.

  5. awwww, thanks for your comments!
    Caroline--Thanks! I really want a Ben/Penny interaction too. By interaction, I mean a murder.
Ershin--YEAH that regeneration was bad! It makes Eleven look so much better in comparison.
    Rachel--It broke my brain too.
