ReplyDeleteDelia is a realtor. Who knew? All of these years I thought she just worked at the antique shop with Melinda. Anyway, she's selling a house that previously belonged to the Bancroft family. Apparently, they just left one day, leaving just about everything: furniture, pictures, an Xbox (Ned was, of course, most interested in this).
Delia leaves to pick up Melinda and assigns Ned to lawn-mowing duty. In this scene, we get a first glimpse at the main ghost of the episode: a little boy with a bloody arm. When Delia returns, there's an ambulance and a police car in front of the house. They got a call about a lawn mower accident. Delia rushes to the backyard where Ned is explaining that he didn't make the call. Police guess it was just a prank. Appearance No. 2 is made by ghost boy, still scowling and silent.
Delia shows Melina pictures of the Bancrofts, and they discover that the ghost is that of their youngest son, Josh. After this revelation, Melinda sees Jim talking to someone on his phone. She talks to him later and realizes it was Jordan, Sam's sister—not the woman he was going to propose to, Nicole. Jim asks Melinda if it was love at first sight for her and her husband, and she says yes. He tells her that he and Nicole were an on-again, off-again couple for eight years, and apparently he finally just "flaked out."
Another 911 call is made from the same house, repeating the exact same message as the first. When Melinda shows up, she talks to Josh's ghost, telling him that his family has moved on and so should he. He disagrees because "they're running away but they can't escape."
Melinda discovers that Josh's parents split up after he died. She goes to visit Elena Bancroft and gives her a vase from her old house. She doesn't take it because she wants a completely fresh start. She confides in Melinda that she blames Doug, her ex-husband, for Josh's death.
At one of Grandview's many coffee shops, Ned helps Jim log in to his email account because he doesn't remember his password. He finds an email he sent Nicole that told her he was ready to marry her.
Doug Bancroft comes to his old house and talks to Melinda and Delia, while Josh is also there. He causes all of the phones to ring simultaneously, playing the 911 message when they pick up. His father says he's been getting them for days. Melinda asks why Josh is hurting his dad. To this he replies coldly, "he knows why." After that, Melinda goes outside and sees dead grass displaying the message "HELP ME."
Melinda's friend at the police station tells her that the message they're been taking as a prank call was a real message from 2006. On that same day, minutes before, another message had been left. It was only someone yelling, "no, no, no!" several times.
Late at night, Delia is going back to the Bancroft house for some paperwork. Oh, of course it's dark and stormy and the electricity is out. That's how these scenes work. And in comes the shadowy figure. Melinda calls the police. They swiftly catch the trespasser, who turns out to be Devin Bancroft, Josh's older brother.
Melinda plays the first 911 message from 2006 for Delia and Eli. It sounds like whoever was shouting "no!" was getting closer to the phone, and then the call ends.
Meanwhile, Devin is standing on the roof of his old house, playing the video of him and his brother riding the lawn mower on his phone. He closes his eyes and lets himself fall.
Jim shows up at the house the instant Devin jumped, and when Melinda finds him, he's remembered somehow to make a splint for Devin while the ambulance arrives.
Devin survives, miraculously. Melinda enters his hospital room. The whole family is together now—even Josh is in the room. Devin's dad tries to tell Melinda the same story as before: he was on the mower with Josh when he lost control, they hit a rock, and Josh fell off. Devin tells him to stop lying. He says his dad wasn't even outside when it happened: Devin and Josh were riding the mower and Josh wanted to steer. They were goofing around when they crashed. His dad prevented him from calling 911 first. Mr. Bancroft was afraid to tell his wife because she'd already lost one son, and he didn't want her to never forgive the other.
No one is to blame, Mrs. Bancroft assured Josh when he tries to blame himself. He saw the light, and though he didn't want to leave his family, they knew they had each other so he crossed over.
So, a happy ending for the Bancrofts, but what about Melinda and Jim?
Well, Jim has decided he's going to find Nicole and see what she can tell him about his past. He says goodbye, leaving Melinda in an empty parking lot.
Wait, what? Hopefully they won't be separated for long, though. Melinda really needs to just tell him everything. I mean, in my humble opinion. But what do you all think? Let's hear your two cents!
ok, so there is two things bothering me, and it really doesn't have to do with this particular episode. At the end of last season, there was the "shadow"-thing. How come that has yet to be addressed?? And, by the way, what ever happened to her brother??
