Tonight's CSI officially ended an era. Grissom announces that he's leaving CSI. This probably isn't news for anyone who saw the preview from last week or has read the news coverage on the show lately, but now it's official: William Peterson is moving on.
The CSI team takes this news about as well as you would expect. Catherine, who will be the new supervisor, is not surprised--she must have been reading the news coverage. Nick and Greg don't say much. Hodges takes it very badly, especially since he hears it through the grapevine and not from Grissom. Wendy very sweetly thanks him for all his help and support and David gets an “I'll miss you” from Grissom.
Grissom's news is certainly a bombshell, but it's quickly overshadowed by their new case. Grissom is called out to examine skeletal remains found in a garbage bag in a swamp. We've already seen that the victim inside was strangled, shoved in a garbage bag, and then dumped in the swamp-and then we got to watch the body decompose, which I really could have lived without ever seeing.
The team determines that the victim was strangled. Identification is difficult, but they do find a Star of David pendant. Grissom searches through the missing persons database and finds Joel Steiner who has been missing since 1997 and is presumed dead. The police believe that he was a victim of the, stupidly named, Dick and Jane serial murderer: Nathan Haskell.
Haskell was named the Dick and Jane murderer because he targeted couples, although, only the men's bodies were ever found. Haskell stabbed his victims with the number of wounds corresponding with the victim number, so 5 wounds for the 5th victim. The police never found a victim with just one stab wound, so they assumed that they never found the first victim. Joel was thought to be that victim.
Joel's mother identifies the Star of David pendant, but the identification doesn't last long, because Hodges realizes that the running shoes worn by the swamp victim were custom made 2 years ago—long after Joel went missing. They track the shoes back to Gerald Tolliver. Gerald, a recent police informant, went missing six months ago. In his house, they find tokens from each of the Dick and Jane murder victims, including concert tickets, so they hypothesize that he was an associate of Haskell.
Greg also finds a bloody footprint, which he links to a couple murdered only a few weeks ago. That couple also were going to see a concert. The team discovers that the tickets were used even though the couple was dead. The tickets lead them back to Curtis Keesey—who has a record. A quick trip to his house finds yet another body—his own.
During all this, Grissom is interviewing Haskell, who was sentenced to life in prison after confessing to the murders. Haskell is a bit of a fame whore, so he's agreed to be interviewed by a university class. The professor of this class, Langston, is played by none other than Laurence Fishburne!
Professor Langston is a former pathologist who started studying serial killers after failing to notice one in his own hospital. Grissom attends his class as a visiting professor, but Grissom's questions eventually reveal himself to be a cop. Langston is less than thrilled that they lied to him, but when Haskell calls Langston from prison, wanting to give them the location of Joel's body, he calls Grissom.
Grissom and Brass follow his directions and find two skeletons and a much fresher corpse. And we find “To Be Continued”.
This was certainly a packed episode with multiple killers being killed and copycat murders. Not to mention yet another serial killer. But enough about the crime, what about Grissom leaving?? Will the show be the same without him? Can Laurence Fishburne fill his shoes? I don't know, but I'm looking forward to finding out. Let me know what you think. Leave your Two Cents below.
