When I say I can’t wait for season two, it’s not a dig. I just want to see how this show looks when it’s out of the imposing shadow of The Shield. So far, it’s been very difficult for me to write about SAMCRO without making comparisons, particularly with actors crossing over and commercials running during the show. This week, the interrogation tactics used by Agent Stahl could have been lifted from Vic Mackey’s playbook, and any police scenes are going to invite comparison.

Anyway…The clubhouse is raided after a witness identifies Bobby for the hit in Oakland. The Sons can’t find Opey. They find out that he and his family were picked up during the night by ATF agents in limousines. No one knows if Opey was handcuffed, but they do know that a large part of the mortgage was paid off, so all signs point to him being a capybara (had to go there)

Taking over the station, Stahl locks Chief Unser in a cell and evicts Hale from the premises. She separates Bobby, Opey and Donna as she begins questioning and driving wedges. She shows Donna the witness’ police sketch of Opey. She bluffs a story to Bobby about Opey’s statement. When Opey returns to the clubhouse to tell his side of the story, Tig finds bugs that the ATF had planted in Opey’s truck. Clay publicly stands by Opey, but Tig convinces him to take him out. Clay seems more concerned about deniability than doing the right thing.

Meanwhile, Jax’s ex-wife Wendy is released from rehab. She plans to check into a hotel as she waits for a room in a halfway house. Gemma encourages her to return home. As she visits Abel in the hospital and starts to feed him, she is watched cautiously by both Tara and Gemma.

Interesting how Opey has moved from a side character to the main focus of the show. He’s also looking like a potential battleground between Jax and Clay. His quest for redemption is probably the most interesting thread running through this first season, and that sets it apart from other FX shows. Looking to next season, it will probably be on the night after Damages, which should really give the show its own voice. There is a quiet, underlying sense of tragedy here that might be the show’s stamp on the lineup.

So there’s my two cents…What you think? Drop them in the comments or drop me a line at tom@thetwocents.com.
