7:00 PM, on a Monday, and Frank is doing bong hits behind the bar. The guys are so fascinated by him that when Dee starts complaining about feeling weird, and eventually collapses, the only reaction is Dennis asking, “What is her problem?”
At the hospital, she is diagnosed with a mild heart attack. When Frank enters (in a hospital gown), he announces that he had dropped the family’s medical insurance years ago. They are tossed out of the hospital, and they all become concerned about their health and lack of insurance.
Mac and Charlie comb the paper for available jobs that provide benefits. They arrive at the interview sharing a resume, offering to split the mail room salary between them, and agreeing to work for minimum wage. Finding an abandoned office, Mac tries to pass himself off as “the new guy”, like Michael J. Fox in The Secret of My Success. The two start chain smoking and drinking coffee in order to relax. The plan backfires, and a wired Charlie begins to develop more intricate systems of delivering mail, not to mention conspiracy theories about deliveries to people who may or may not be actual employees (or even in the room with them).
Dee and Dennis decide to join a gym. They approach the cardio machines, but decide that they need a better workout wardrobe and some smoothies for nourishment. They go to a spinning class, but can’t stand the instructor’s music, so Dennis returns to his car to provide better selections. Dee berates the instructor for making the class “all about him”. Abusing workout supplements leaves Dennis constipated, while Dee develops diarrhea. Seeing the effects on their faces, Dee buys a botox / collagen kit with Spanish instructions. Unable to decipher, she injects the collagen in the wrong place. This leads them to the free clinic, where they meet Mac and Charlie, who are having panic attacks.
Still obsessed with hospital gowns (“My a** can breathe!”), Frank returns to the apartment with a slough of prescription drugs, mostly to fight anxiety. He washes these down with beer and hits the streets. The meds all kick in at the same time, and he is brought to a facility eerily similar to One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. He is medicated further, until he meets a large patient of native ancestry. Frank convinces him to rip the water fountain from the floor. When he uses it to break the window, Frank makes his escape.
I guess with DeVito in the cast, it was a matter of time before some sort of Cuckoo’s Nest gag. I’m thinking the idea hit them when they wrote the last episode, with Dennis in the clinic. Not being able to work it into that episode turns out to be a blessing in disguise. DeVito, as always, eats this up, along with the robe’s failure to cover his entire anatomy. The shared resume scene is bound to be a classic moment for the show.
There’s my two cents. What do you think? Drop them in the comments or drop me a line at: tom@thetwocents.com .
