Melinda meets a little girl's imaginary friend who might be more important than anyone thinks. His name is Owen, and he claims he's trying to protect Jim's old friend Tricia from something "very bad." Melinda must help Owen get his message across before it's too late for both he and Tricia. Oh, and not to mention the episode ending that will change thing on Ghost Whisperer forever.

Melinda, Jim, and Delia are helping Jim's friend Tricia and her fiancé Hunter prepare for their wedding. Melinda and Jim are going with them to their cabin for the wedding. Tricia and her daughter Natalie leave for ice cream, Hunter shows off the necklace he's going to surprise Tricia with later.

At the cabin, Tricia and Nat prepare for the guests. Tricia goes downstairs while Natalie stays to play. She begins talking to someone, supposedly her imaginary friend. This imaginary friend, however, has the ability to open and slam doors as he leads her into another room. A key falls from one of the shelves, and her "friend" leads her down another hallway where Nat unlocks a door and goes inside. The door slams behind her.

Meanwhile, the whole gang is looking for Natalie. They finally find her in a closet. She says her friend's helping her find something. They walk back out to the living room, and Natalie shows Hunter the box she says "he" gave her. It's the box with the necklace we saw earlier in the episode. Tricia opens it, and ants come crawling out. Ick. Natalie says her friend's been waiting and he doesn't want them to leave.

Melinda later tells Jim about Natalie's ghost friend. They think that it could be Tricia's old husband, Jeremy.

Hunter's friend Chris shows up the next day, and they talk about their plan to open a steakhouse. Chris hands Hunter a gift, and that's the last we see of ol' Chris this episode.

Melinda talks wedding plans with Tricia when they notice Nat wandering off into the woods. Mel finds her sitting by a stream. Nat explains that her ghost/imaginary friend left because he doesn't like talking to people. She says he's angry and really sick.

At the rehearsal dinner, Nat convinces her mother to come with her and her mystery friend. She agrees, and they go back to the cabin. A toy car leads Tricia to a dresser. She reaches inside a drawer and pricks her finger on an icepick.
Natalie is in her room, drawing pictures, when Melinda comes to talk to her. There's one picture of Owen, the ghost. He's wearing leg braces. He's sad, and Nat says this is because he knows something bad is about to happen.

Melinda shows the pictures to Tricia, who tells her they don't look familiar. One drawing isn't Natalie's though. Tricia's mother comes into the room and tells them about the game Tricia used to play with her imaginary friend: clues would be hidden around the house, and the first letter of each clue would spell a secret word. Melinda takes Tricia to the creek where Owen is wandering around. Before disappearing, he insists that Tricia has to play the game with him.

Tricia's putting the final touches on her seating chart when the door of her room opens by itself. Tricia walks out into the hallway. The doors down the hall slam shut—a signature ghost move—as Tricia continues into the basement. There's a bucket of water and apples. Owen writes in dust "bob" and Tricia goes ahead and bobs for apples. Sticking her head in a bucket of murky water in a dimly lit basement. Tsk, tsk. This is a recipe for disaster. She comes up with an apple and a face covered in leeches. Again, ick.

Melinda and Jim struggle to decode the message Owen is sending Tricia. The three letters they have are AIL: Ants, icepick, leeches. Their first thought is ailment. They investigate the diseases Owen could have had that caused him to have leg braces, finding the Owen Grace Foundation, created after Owen's death. He didn't die from his disease, but drowned in the creek not too far from the cabin.

Owen finally tells Melinda what happened to him. He and Tricia were friends, and she always helped him cross the river using a rope tied to a tree. One day, Tricia wasn't there to help. The other kids cut the rope, so he was left to cross the river by himself. He tripped and drowned, but stayed ever since to wait for Tricia. Owen says Tricia has all of the clues she needs, she just didn't look hard enough.

Tricia tells Melinda that she found a rope on her bed, and they ponder what the letters spell. Rail? Liar? They go back through the clues, and the drawer that held the icepick also had the gift Chris gave Hunter: a picture of them from twelve years ago, and the picture reads "Robert Langouste." Tricia realizes that "Hunter" lied about his entire past for money, and that's why the clues read "liar." Tricia calls off the wedding, and Melinda goes to find Owen, but he's disappeared.

Jim and Melinda are back in Grandview, dropping off things from the wedding. Jim has to make one last trip out to the cabin. After he leaves, Owen appears to Melinda. He says Hunter's still at the cabin, and he doesn't want anyone else to get hurt. Melinda calls Detective Carl Neely and tells him about Hunter. They agree to meet at the cabin.

Jim finds Hunter drinking in the dark, "waiting." Jim takes a step toward him, and Hunter pulls out the rifle that had been sitting in his lap. This is the part where I get a little bit antsy. I've heard the rumors about a lack of Jim Clancy this season.

When Det. Neely and Melinda get there, they can't see inside clearly. Hunter finally shoots at Jim (at which point I jump up and scream "NO!") but he isn't hurt. Neely is pointing his gun at the two fighting silhouettes. He shoots, obviously hitting someone, and there's a long moment before we see Jim Clancy fall to the ground (and me, throwing all objects within reach at the television screen).

Stupid Carl Neely. Who shoots at unidentifiable silhouettes behind a curtain?

Melinda is at the hospital with Delia, and Eli brings them coffee just as the nurse calls for Mel. She says the shot wasn't as bad as they had thought and he's in stable condition, but they need to keep an eye on him for a while.

Tricia and Natalie come to see how Jim is. Owen comes in at the same time, thanking Tricia for being his friend, and Tricia thanks him for helping her. She says she wishes she could see him, but Owen says she sees all that matters. Tricia hugs her daughter, and Owen joins in the embrace before crossing over.

Melinda is alone with Jim in his hospital room, waiting hours for him to wake up. She finally falls asleep at his side. Jim finally wakes her up. He begins to say something about an aneurysm (at which point my heart breaks), but stops. He tells her that this is how he wants her to remember him. Melinda looks at him, eyes wide, as the heart monitor begins to beep and flatlines. Melinda was talking to Jim's ghost. The doctors try to resuscitate him, but Jim's ghost quickly disappears. Melinda stands beside the bed in shock, crying, and this episode draws to a close.

I'm still in shock. What were they thinking, killing off the best TV husband on the air?

So, what did you think? Forming an angry mob? Think there's a good reason they're doing this to Jim and Melinda (and us)? Don't be shy. Let's hear your two cents!

  2. ok, you asked for it. I was shocked and pissed and angry and every emotion in the book when I saw that Jim died. I don't read spoilers for this show, so let me tell ya, I too wanted to throw everything at the tv. Finally a show where there is a married couple with a very strong relationship and they go and ruin it.... why? I guess we will have to see where it leads.

  3. Ugh!!! I knew this was coming, but OMG! WHY!?! Man... they better have some crazy way to bring him back to life. He can't just be a ghost following her around for the rest of her life. And she better NOT get a boyfriend or something stupid like that! I will keeping watching, but if this isn't resolved in a satisfactory manner, no more!
