How do you make Eli Stone cooler? Cast possibly the best character actor on TV today, Steven Culp. Chances are you’ve seen this guy more times than you know, whether it’s as Rex on Desperate Housewives, Clayton Webb on JAG, or the fact he’s guest-starred on pretty much every great show. He brings that same great acting to this episode, as Jim Cooper, a rich magnate who wants to use medical marijuana in a clinical trial to cure his son’s multiple sclerosis, except the government won’t let him.

Wethersby, Stone and Associates (as it’s now known) needs Cooper as a client badly. You see they’ve been losing them left and right, especially since Posner & Klein seem to know what they’re going to do before they do it. The firm has a mole! Eli wants to suggest Matt, which Taylor doesn’t find very funny, but she vows to find out who it is. By which, she goes to Matt and asks him to find out who it is. Oh, and she still doesn’t tell him she’s pregnant. He’s not going to be happy when he does find out.

Meanwhile, Patti needs Keith’s help. Her daughter, Angela, has been arrested on a DUI, and needs a good criminal defense lawyer. With a little bullying she gets Keith to take the case. Angela (played by Taraji P. Henson, a really good actress in her own right) has apparently never batted an eyelash out of line, so Keith goes to the ADA (in another name-drop, Deirdre Lovejoy, who also played an ADA on The Wire) and does some negotiating. The DA agrees to drop the charges but wants Angela to submit to a blood test. Seems easy enough. The thorny part comes when Keith asks Angela on a date.

Eli and Jordan manage to convince Jim Cooper that they have a trial strategy that can work for him at his son’s swim meet, and land him as a client. That would be all well and good if Eli then doesn’t have yet another vision involving lots of fire, and the ever-amazing showman Victor Garber singing a song about not messing with Jim. Hrm. Yeah, God is being incredibly obvious and I don’t think He wants Eli to take this case. As it turns out, neither does Cooper’s son, J.J. If he takes part in the study, having pot in his system for any reason will disqualify him from the swim team, which as it turns out is the only thing he can do that isn’t under the thumb of dear old Dad. Not that he’s told this to his father.

This doesn’t sit well with Eli and when Cooper starts testifying about how much his son wants to be a part of his new scheme, Eli interrupts and starts talking about perjury. But they’re legally obligated to win the case, which they do. Eli encourages J.J. to be honest with his father, but the kid can’t do it. This makes Eli wonder if his visions had some other meaning: that by winning the case he’s somehow ruined things for this kid and that’s what God was trying to tell him. Dr. Chen tells Eli that defying God is generally bad; look what happened to Lucifer. Ha, ha.

Meanwhile, Matt and Maggie have exposed the mole: some random guy we’ve never seen before and never will again. Maggie is hurt that Eli didn’t ask for her help. She misses him. Awww, how sweet. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Keith gets a call from the ADA: Angela’s blood test results are back and she had cocaine in her system. Ouch. Patti is not going to be pleased.

But there’s one last surprise: J.J. turns up on Eli’s doorstep wanting to be emancipated and wanting Eli to represent him. I’m sort of annoyed the kid chooses now to have a spine. Judging from the previews for the show two weeks (!) from now, though, Eli takes the case. Hey, at least I get to see more of Steven Culp.

What did you think? Does anyone else see Patti having a major meltdown next week? Who else misses Nate? Let me know.

  2. Yeah, you gotta figure when Eli completely ignores his visions and does the opposite of what they say there will be trouble. I just wonder how he will make it right next episode.

And just how cool was Victor Garber singing and throwing fire?!!

If Patti finds out about her daughter's drug thing (I'm guessing she will) she will have a major melt down.

I am anxious to see what Matt's reaction will be when he hears his daddy to be news.
