Sons of Anarchy has been approved for a second season by FX. Part of that has got to be the supporting cast. I can imagine bikers looking at these guys and thinking they pulled people off the street instead of having a casting call. This particular episode, however, is anchored by Katey Sagal, as we see the Sons deal with Gemma’s menopause, unique hiding places for guns, and a unique assault with a skateboard. Ally Walker (Profiler) also joins the cast as an ATF agent who is immediately suspicious of Kohn.

As the episode begins, the Sons sell weapons to a militant group that tries to shortpay them. Doesn’t get them off to a good start, but the leader served with Piney, so it’s passed over. The relationship deteriorates further when they use the guns to spring a prisoner during a transport, and a cop is killed. Jax tells surviving officer Trammell that SAMCRO needs to find the shooter before the cops do.
This alerts Agent Stahl (Walker) of the ATF, who brings Clay in for questioning. Stahl notices the oil drums they have been using to transport the guns. With Clay out of commission, Jax steps into the leadership role, meeting resistance. SAMCRO just got a new shipment of guns, and if the ATF gets closer, their IRA connection could put them on a watch list. He makes the decision to move the guns from the oil drums to the septic tanker truck. When the Feds move on the clubhouse, they find nothing, and Kohn goes berserk, trashing the room. As a result, Jax earns the respect of the Sons, and Stahl becomes more suspicious about Kohn’s presence in Charming.
Jax reads his father’s writings concerning the subjects of aging and regret. The Sons return to sell the same people the remainder of the guns. Their leader and Piney share one last reunion before he disappears into the hills. When they are out of range, Opey sets off a blast that takes out the headquarters. Jax pays off Trammell and lets him know that the score has been settled. He heads to the hospital to visit Abel, and he and Tara discuss Kohn. Tara asks for a ride home, and we see Kohn’s car following.
Gemma begins to show symptoms of the onset of menopause. When Juice returns from Nevada with Terri, she reads Halfsack’s reaction and puts the history together between him, Terri and Clay. After picking up her medication at the pharmacy, she notices Terri on the street. She grabs a skateboard from a passing kid and slams Terri across the nose, landing herself in jail. Clay is released, and goes to bail out Gemma, but she refuses, saying she needs “me time”. When she is released the next morning, Terri appears with an apology. She promises to leave Clay alone. Returning to Clay, Gemma calls him “transparent”, and says that a “threesome ain’t gonna happen.”
Between the skateboard moment (which comes out of nowhere) and the scene with Clay in jail, this episode shows the actress we’ve been waiting to see. The relationship between her and Perlman grows deeper and more authentic with each episode. Jax is still the main character, but the marquee value of these two name actors wasn’t really paying dividends in the first few episodes. Kudos as well to Piney (William Lucking) and Halfsack (Johnny Lewis), who make the most of their screen time.
