I watched tonight's episode with my mother, who is new to Dirty Sexy Money. Last week I filled her in on some of the overall plot basics and happenings of last season, and about halfway through this episode she turned to me and asked, "Is there any day in this family where there isn't a crisis?" No, mom. There isn't. If there was anything but all out insanity 24/7, they would not be the Darlings. Then again, she also pointed out that Nick and Lisa have the same haircut, so I'm not sure which of us takes this less seriously.

I watched tonight's episode with my mother, who is new to Dirty Sexy Money. Last week I filled her in on some of the overall plot basics and happenings of last season, and about halfway through this episode she turned to me and asked, "Is there any day in this family where there isn't a crisis?" No, mom. There isn't. If there was anything but all out insanity 24/7, they would not be the Darlings. Then again, she also pointed out that Nick and Lisa have the same haircut, so I'm not sure which of us takes this less seriously.
So once again, Nick is set with the task that only the most Herculean of lawyers can hope to achieve. Not only is he charged with choosing which Darling brat is going to inherit the kingdom, as he so eloquently put it, but he is being pressured into defending Letitia for the murder of his own father. If you were thinking, "Wait. Defending a woman for the murder of his father… shouldn't he recuse himself?"… congratulations, you and I had the same thought. I think Nick had the right of it when he said, "It makes us look like we're all in bed together." And all things considered, I don't think that his wording could have been more apt if you know what I mean.
Simon is still puzzling me. In this episode he flat out told Karen that she should be the vice chair of the family business, and then turned around and basically told Nick that they both knew she wasn't qualified. (Also, an MBA from Columbia? Really?) I can only guess at his motives, did he want Karen to have the position because he thought she would screw it up? Or does he want to drive a wedge in between the Darlings by making Karen resentful that the job's not hers? Hm…
I was wondering when we were going to see Nola doing something besides jumping Jeremy's bones, and while I was glad to… what's the deal with her fixation? I mean, I heard her explanation, it just seems flimsy at best. But she's a shark, no doubt of that.
Back to Nick for a moment, what Nola said caught my eye. (Well, rather, ear.) "You're the darlingest Darling of them all." Juxtapose that with what Brian said in the cell, and it sounds like maybe he could be more of a Darling than we think. Normally I would reserve judgment until we had more information to go on, but I think we can call this one maybe not so baseless as we may think. They really hit us over the head again with how Nick was seemingly on the outside of the family his entire life, he even calls himself "clean-up crew." Tripp also gives him the vice chair position seemingly against Nick's own advice -- and yet, I couldn't help but see a glint of satisfaction in Nick's eye.
One thing I appreciate about the Darlings (or, okay, the writers of the show) is that they are outrageous and maybe even unlikeable, but they are still humans. They hit on this with an obvious way -- Tripp even tells Patrick to "be a human being" when writing Ellen's eulogy. Patrick's evident guilt at even thinking of capitalizing on the death for votes speaks of a scrupulousness that I was shocked, yet touched to see. (Will it stop them from doing it? My guess is not, but the thought was there.) The less obvious way was Letitia's breakdown leaving the court as they were being hounded by the media circus. It's hard not to feel bad for someone in that position.
Two things that don't really fit anywhere else. First, worst funeral ever, although Patrick's eulogy about Carmelita with Ellen's name replaced went over much, much better than I expected it to; second, just as I was about to open my mouth and say that I couldn't even imagine what twenty million dollars would look like, they paraded it into the courtroom. Thanks for the visual aid, ABC.
Finally, I think my Reality Check of the Week has to go to Tripp for indirectly pressuring Nick to take the case and defend Letitia. I'd think any court in the land would demand that Nick recuse himself, but then again, this is Darlingverse.
So, is Patrick going to end up capitalizing on Ellen's death to garner votes? Will Nola resist Jeremy's charms? What is Simon up to? Is Nick going to change with his new vice chair position? Are Lisa and Nick going to make up their freaking minds about the baby business? Who is actually screwing who around here? See you in two weeks!
