There’s a rule that we only get to look into Stabler’s family life once per season and this week, we definitely got a front row seat. His daughter, Kathleen, is found trespassing and showering in someone’s house and totally high on drugs. Turns out she’s self medicating and Stabler had no idea how far off the path his daughter had gone.

Four Things That Made This Episode Great:

    1. Ellen Burstyn as Stabler’s mother. She lives by the ocean and calls herself eccentric but is really bipolar. Ellen Burstyn and Christopher Meloni play well off of each other. It feels like Ellen’s been on the show for years as Stabler’s mom, even though this is her first appearance. It wouldn’t make sense to bring her back and reprise the role but she gave a fantastic performance and I’ll miss her character.

    2. Diving into a topic like bipolar disorder isn’t easy and while I don’t know how unmedicated bipolar sufferers are, it seemed like they handled the subject well. The moment between Bernadette Stabler and Kathleen is especially well done, as Kathleen asks her grandmother if she thinks she’s crazy. Bernadette replies that she thinks she’s different. It’s too bad SVU can’t be the type of show that looks into the detective’s families more often because it was an interesting dynamic.

    3. Pictures of a young Christopher Meloni. Come on, how amazing was that? The carrot photo was phenomenal. I would crack up if I had to look at those photos and do a serious scene.

    4. When Kathleen gets to go to treatment and not jail, Stabler is confused and asks Benson what happened. She says this, “Maybe God remembered how cute you were as a carrot.” How fantastic was that?

So what did you think? Do you like or hate when they look into Stabler’s personal life? Leave your TwoCents in the comments!

  2. I LOVED this episode. The deeper they go into the characters, the more I like it. That dynamic in this show is fantastic. And the way Liv helped Elliot...squee!!!

  3. If I didn't like Elliot with his family soooo much ~ I would do jump for him to be with Olivia. I love getting to see his family & see what makes him tick. This episode was incredible. Ellen Burstyn is one of my fav actresses & does SUCH a wonderful job playing an "eccentric". She should really be up for a guest Emmy next year. Can I ask for her as a granma for Christmas?!

  4. Melanie - very much agreed! Sometimes, I wish they would go deeper into the characters, especially some of the other detectives.

Slice of Paradise - Ellen Burstyn is fantastic and I'm sure you're right about her being up for an Emmy next year. I'd be surprised if she wasn't. And I agree with you about Elliot and his family. I like his chemistry with Liv but I like it as just that.
