Dexter Morgan, Family Man. Hmm, ok . . . I could potentially see where this is going. Dexter Morgan, Married Family Man. Ok –HOLD. UP. Dexter, being a sociopath and all, doesn’t really pick up social cues. After a completely botched attempt to announce the new baby to Astor and Cody, the oldest of the Bennett children points out that the two adults are not married. So Dexter, thinking that this family man – married family man thing could work out well to keep his cover (it sounds much better than “lives-alone-keeps-to-himself”) so he asks Rita to marry him. I kid you not, he really does.

Obviously, his heart is not in it. Rita, rightly so, rejects his proposal. She doesn’t want to force anyone into a marriage just because there’s a baby. If she gets married again, she wants it to be because someone loves her. So, since Dexter can’t ever love, and has a hard time faking that particular emotion, him and Rita won’t be getting married anytime soon. But, when Rita rejects his marriage proposal, it’s almost as if Dexter is a little confused, and frankly, even a little sad that he can’t understand what love is supposed to feel like, and can’t fake it enough to give it to Rita. So, Dexter tries another route, convincing Rita that marriage is financially sound now that they’re beginning a family. Rita’s response: literal vomit. She has morning sickness.

Since Dexter is a Cop Drama of sorts, there obviously needs to be an investigation in each episode. In this one there is, of course, a brutal murder that needs some blood spatter analysis. Jack has been brutally murdered, and his girlfriend a frail looking little brunette was the witness to the whole thing. Girl is basically in a catatonic state, and when Deb tries to question her about the details the only thing Fiona can talk about is how in love her and Jack were. Dexter is mentally jotting down notes – this is what love is supposed to look like.

Miguel wants to bring in his younger brother Ramon into the “Freebo is Dead” circle. But, for obvious reasons, Dexter is not so excited about the idea. So, he sets forth, using his keen manipulating skills, to show Miquel just how off-kilter his brother is. As always, his plan goes through flawlessly. But not without it’s hitches. Dexter doesn’t like manipulating Miguel, after all, they’re bros now.

Masuka has recently upgraded his status in the world of forensics. Since his article was recently featured in FQ (Forensics Quarterly), he’s now doing conferences and giving speeches. Unfortunately, no one is particularly interested in Masuka’s successes. As Dexter points out, it seems that everyone only likes him when he’s making jokes about well, X-Rated things (this is a family website, k?!).

Thankfully, there is no annoying Yuki in this episode. Internal Affairs is no where to be seen. Thank the lord, because that lady is annoying, annoying, annoying. But, Deb definitely has IA on the brain. Quinn is hogging her witness and getting through in a way Deb can’t. It rubs Deb the wrong way, and all she can think about is how sketchy her partner is. Personally, I think she’s just being petty. Unfortunately, Yuki is still alive an well. She shows up at the end of the episode, taunted Deb as usual.

The Miguel and Dexter Bromance continues. For one reason or another, Dexter is determined to convince Rita that his marriage proposal is sincere – even though he knows that it’s not at all. But, he continues to try. He’s gone as far to enlist the help of his new bestest friend – Miguel Prado. This friendship either has a lot of potential, or will go down the same route as Lila and Brian. Let’s hope it doesn’t end that way, because so far, Miguel isn’t a sociopathic murderer. But he does seem to read Dexter very well. So he very well could be a serial killer. Could Miguel be “The Slicer”? It would be an interesting twist.

We all know that Angel is a sad, lonely man. The new Sargeant has even started paying for it. But it turns out that the hooker he picks up is an undercover officer, and she lets him off the hook. But not without a stern, and I mean, really stern warning. Angel is totally into it. I mean, one doesn’t just tell their sob story to just any woman they want to sleep with. When that happens, it’s serious.

Dexter’s blood spatter analysis has revealed Jack’s true killer. It’s his “fiancée,” Fiona. Actually not his fiancée, but rather a crazy sociopath that was murderously in love with Jack. Dexter is impressed. He’s entranced by how Fiona shows her perfect love towards the man she killed. During a questioning she lays out just how Jack made her feel. Jack made her real. Before Jack, her life was “an unanswered question.” Dexter is convinced that if Fiona can make her love so real, there’s no reason that he can’t fake it for Rita.

I think I might be one of the few Dexter fans that (a) loves Dexter and Rita and (b) loves all the moments where there’s a glimpse of Human Dexter. Let me explain why. The best part of the show has to be all of Dexter’s interior monologues, they reveal the most about what’s going on inside of Dexter. I honestly feel that Dexter wants to be a real person. Rita and her family are a stepping stone to his realness. So when he proposes to Rita for the third time, it doesn’t matter that he stole half of his speech from Crazy Fiona, because it just seems so sincere, because he so wants to be a real person. So yeah, not going to lie. Love that Dexter and Rita are getting married.
