Prologue:
A woman is in a jewelry store looking to trade in a piece for cash, but the storeowner thinks that the piece is too valuable for them to pay for. He agrees to try to look for a buyer, but it may take a week. She goes out to her car and we find out that she is Sally Larkin, a former actor, and she is going through a messy divorce. We hear a scream, and when the owner runs out, she is gone!
During the routine investigation of the site of the crime, Monk’s archenemy Harold Crenshaw shows up… but surprisingly he isn’t challenging Adrian at all. He tells Monk and Natalie that his Hypnotherapist has changed his life, and gives Monk a business card. The gang goes to Larkin’s house to talk to him, and Disher offers up some home made gum for everyone to try. It’s so disgusting, Stottlemeyer spits his out and can’t find it before Mr Larkin comes out for questioning. Natalie asks Monk to promise her that he won’t call the Hypnotherapist without talking to Dr. Bell first. He agrees, but of course disregards his promise that night when he makes an appointment.
Monk has his appointment, and afterwards is acting very un-Monk like. He’s not afraid of getting dirty when they search the estate of Mr Larkin, including jumping in a mud puddle. Needless to say, Stottlemeyer and the crew are befuddled by Mr Monk’s behavior. Apparently the hypnosis has worked on him. They go back to see Mr Larkin at his office and even in his crazy state Monk determines that Mr Larkin is in love with his assistant. Larkin confirms this, but he was keeping it a secret since she is still married. Natalie finally figures out that Monk has visited the Hypnotherapist, against her request.
The next scene reveals that Sally is alive! She comes out of the woods looking disheveled and hails a passing truck. Meanwhile, Dr Bell has come over to Monk’s house to check out the damage on him. He tells the gang that Monk had reverted to his childhood in an effort to relive it the way that he always wanted to. His advice to Stottlemeyer is treat him like he always does with the hope that he will snap out of it.
We find out that Sally was seemingly held captive by her husband against her will in a remote cabin. She had killed him during her escape. Monk is no help with his first grade antics. As Sally is trying to tell her story back at the station, Monk is misbehaving again. Including betting Randy that he’d eat gum off of Sally’s shoe (which he does). Stottlemeyer orders him out of the room, and Monk runs away. He roams around the city and sees a lot, including Harold standing nude in the middle of a street! He then decides to go back to the Larkin estate to bring a frog back that he had taken as a pet.
There he runs into Sally, who seems a little too sure of herself. Monk seems to all of a sudden gain his composure and recant how Sally committed a crime. She faked her own kidnapping and tied herself up for 3 days to make it seem real. Then, she waited in the hall 3 nights later to murder her husband. She brought him to the cabin to make it look like he kidnapped her and she had killed him in self-defense. He called her out because the gum he took off of her shoe was the same gum that Captain Stottlemeyer spit out in Larkin’s house. She tries to take the gum from him (which is now evidence) but Leland and Disher arrive in time to stop her.
Well, it seems that this is the last new episode until January. If you’re like me, you’re already in mourning. This show is so unique and is irreplaceable in my mind. Tony Shaloub has really struck a chord with this character. What will YOU be doing while waiting for the new episodes? I’ll be counting the days, and hopefully they’ll end up being an even number.
