Natalie opens the door to see the Lieutenant, Steve Albright. He reunites with Natalie, but tells her that he’s here to see Monk. Steve believes that Pierce (the XO), a good friend was murdered. He saw a vodka bottle and knew that his friend stopped drinking long ago. Monk tells them he doesn’t “do boats,” but Natalie wins the argument. Adrian is disturbed to discover it’s a submarine! He tells Steve he thinks it was a suicide.. who wouldn’t kill themselves from being down here? Monk checks out the room and finds a small piece of plastic behind a fire extinguisher. It smells like gunpowder. Suddenly, an alarm goes off! The sub has an emergency drill and submerges. Monk tries to escape, but it’s too late. They will be at sea for 5 days!

Monk starts to imagine that Dr. Bell is with him. It makes him feel more comfortable. Later, he calls Disher to ask him to check with the victim’s family to see if they could help. Monk then questions Captain Whittaker why there were two drills. He didn’t seem happy with the questioning. Later Monk figures out that the plastic had come from a bottle of soda that only Captain Whitaker drinks. He determines that he used the bottle as a silencer. He tells Steve that he doesn’t know how, but that the Captain “is the guy”.

Disher calls in and tells Monk and Natalie that Pierce had planned to see a criminal attorney. He challenges the Captain and tells him that he knows that he did it. Apparently the sub hit an underwater mountain and the Captain was trying to save his reputation. He switched the navigational plans to different ones to hide the truth, then somehow killed him. The Captain denies this and tells Monk that he’s delusional.

Monk goes to tell Natalie what he’s figured out. They get note under the door that tells them to go to a certain cabin. When they get there, someone locks the door behind them. When the sub takes a dive, the cabin starts to fill up with water! Steve looks for them, and happens upon the note outside the door. Steve runs to the bridge and tells the Captain to surface because he knows that they’re in the tank. He looks at the Captain knowing that he was involved in his friend’s murder now.

After they are freed from the tank, the Captain comes to see them and Monk tells him that he figured out how he did it. Monk found some powder and a firecracker in the vent. He figures out that the Captain had the silenced gun to Pierce’s head and forced him to drink the vodka. Afterward, he shot him dead. Then he took a cigarette and stuck a firecracker in it to act as a fuse. The noise that the crew heard outside the door was the firecracker, and not the gunshot. Captain Whittaker is relieved of duty.

Soon, the sub surfaces and they arrest the Captain for murder. Monk then sees Dr. Bell, and can’t understand how he got off of the boat so quick. Dr. Bell plays along to keep him happy.

This show has a great way of finding every possible place that would be bad for an Obsessive-Compulsive. After 7 seasons, they are still finding great plot ideas. Tony Shaloub is a master. And they threw in a quick romantic moment for Natalie. I think that the season is holding up well for the series. What did you think? Tell me I’m not alone in my Tony Shaloub love. Your two cents are always appreciated.
