In the grand tradition of Boba Fett, there is a man named Jubal Early. A bounty hunter, Early is on the tail of the outlaws River and Simon; The Alliance has placed a bounty their heads and Early isn’t the type of man to say no to a ginormous amount of cash. In the grand tradition of Boba Fett, there is a man named Jubal Early. A bounty hunter, Early is on the tail of the outlaws River and Simon; The Alliance has placed a bounty their heads and Early isn’t the type of man to say no to a ginormous amount of cash. With the crew all snug in their beds, Early boards Serenity and River, we are led to believe, starts hearing thing. Well, that’s not really new.

A tussle here and a tied up engineer there, Early finds that River has somehow become Serenity. The whole crew, in fact, is as confused as Early is. Then things get really weird. River/Serenity starts telling Early about his past, unnerving the bounty hunter enough to distract him and giving the crew the opportunity to escape their quarters (most had been locked in). The Early figures it out: River has left Serenity and is on board his very own Slave One ship. She tells him she’ll go with him because she has caused too much danger to the crew of Serenity. On his way back to his ship, Mal shows up and, well, Early’s body might still be floating out there in space. The crew welcomes River back onto Serenity where she realizes she has found a home.

    Why this episode is important:
Jubal Early is one interesting guy. At one point, he misunderstands Simon when asked “Are you Alliance?” His response: “Am I a lion? I don't think of myself as a lion. You might as well though, I have a mighty roar.” Ummm… what?

This was the penultimate episode aired by Fox back in 2002, and a final goodbye to fans. The final episode aired was actually the pilot. Dear Fox Executives: What were you thinking?

    Fun Trivia:
The character of Jubal Early was named for a confederate general who attempted (and failed) to invade Washington D.C. in 1864 and is a distant relative of Nathan Fillion.

    Your Two Cents:
What do YOU think? Who is your favorite bounty hunter? Did you believe River had become Serenity? What was with that lion bit? Give us your Two Cents… We’ll donate it to the Jubal Early Memorial Fund.
