This is the first of many Pacey-and-Joey episodes, though the primary storyline is Dawson not being able to get over Jen. Or Joey. Or Jen.

Dawson is obsessing that Jen hasn't tried to hang out with him post-breakup. Joey rubs it in a little, pointing out that Dawson will be able to see next-door neighbor Jen's every date and new kiss from his window, and he will now be known as "the guy Jen dropped". She also tries to prepare him for the "friend" speech, all the while still nursing her own crush.

The speech happens the very next morning, and Dawson tells Jen he needs time to think about still being friends. Pacey is pessimistic, and suggests that Dawson try to move on immediately to show Jen he's not at all uncomfortable with the break-up.

Dawson mans up and tells Jen he'd love to be friends. He tries to start a friendly conversation about the weekend, which Jen immediately backtracks from, even though this was her idea. She hesitantly tells him she has a date with Cliff this weekend. In reaction, Dawson lies about having his own date this weekend, and insanely suggests a double date at the carnival. Jen agrees, looking pretty nauseated about the whole thing.

Pacey has his own problems with failing grades. The teacher believes he can do much better, and asks that he complete an extra credit project - with Joey as his partner. The assignment is to find the conditions that are most conducive to snails' reproduction. Banter ensues, and snails die from snail menage-a-trois.

Dawson ends up asking a (very straightforward) classmate named Mary Beth to the carnival; unfortunately, Dawson forgot to tell her it was a double date, and that does not sit well with Mary Beth. Dawson lies and tells her that Jen wanted him to be there because she felt pressured being alone with Cliff. Dawson and Cliff proceed to engage in proverbial pissing contests for stuffed animals, but Dawson immediately hands his winnings to Jen. Oops.

Pacey and Joey spend their Saturday afternoon on the creek trying to gather replacement snails. Unfortunately, Pacey forgets to tie up the boat, and they have to wade home. They need to change out of their wet clothes, and Pacey watches Joey from the car's side mirror, and begins to feel attracted to her. He also finds out that Joey is not doing extra-credit because she failed; it's because she's desperate to get a scholarship and get out of Capeside.

Mary Beth and Dawson have a heart-to-heart where Mary Beth admits she has a crush on Cliff, and they decide to switch up partners on the ferris wheel. While Mary Beth fascinates Cliff with the non-difference between "flammable" and "inflammable", Jen once again goes back on her suggestion to be friends. Dawson hits back at her that she's dating Cliff when she told him they broke up so she could be alone, and he tells her he still wants to be with her, but she keeps quiet.

Joey and Pacey end up at the carnival, and Pacey pulls Dawson away to ask his permission to pursue Joey. Dawson says ok, then says no, then says ok again. Maybe that's how Joey picked up that habit. Pacey drives Joey home and kisses her at the door. She is very confused, and tells him she only likes him as a friend. Pacey deals, and goes off to work at Screen Play Video, where Dawson busts in all upset. Pacey jokes around about him and Joey, but then gets serious and tells Dawson he better decide which girl he wants. Good advice.

That's all for this one! Leave your Two Cents in the comments.
