If you live in Canada then it’s most likely you’ve been celebrating Canada Day this evening. If you live in the United States and you’re like me, then you were looking forward to seeing what happens with Captain Phil after last week’s cliffhanger. O Deadliest Catch, I sit and wait for thee.

If you live in Canada then it’s most likely you’ve been celebrating Canada Day this evening. If you live in the United States and you’re like me, then you were looking forward to seeing what happens with Captain Phil after last week’s cliffhanger. O Deadliest Catch, I sit and wait for thee.

    The Northwestern –
The Northwestern lost it’s anchor the night before as the cable snapped. So Edgar fashions a grappling hook to try to retrieve it. Since the anchor is worth $5000, it is worth the attempt. Amazingly the plan works and they get it on the first try! They have some trouble hauling it in, but they are successful nonetheless.

    The Time Bandit –

Captain Andy pulls up to port to pick up new greenhorn Earon. Scott gives him the tour of the ship, including a sauna. (They have a SAUNA on board?! You gotta love the Hillstrands). When they get to the fishing grounds, Earon is getting a full blown learning session on how to be a crab fisherman. Scott shows Earon how to work the deck, and Earon learns how sick you can get on the Bering Sea.

    The North American –

Captain Sten is trying to offload during a winter storm. After 18 hours of offloading their catch, they start the repairs of the deck that was damaged during the recent storm. After they do a quick fix to the deck, they head back out to the grounds. Sten allows greenhorn Darrell to work the rail this time out, and he will have to wear a traditional Viking hat with green horns while he does it. As the day moves on, Darrell is getting more and more frustrated with the crew and the job.

    The Cornelia Marie –

Docked at St Paul, the Cornelia Marie sits and the crew waits to hear news about the fate of Captain Phil who is being hospitalized. During an offload, we meet the new greenhorn Dan, and we find out that Murray will be taking over the Cornelia Marie while Phil is unavailable. Murray removes Phil’s seat in a symbolic moment. The Cornelia Marie starts fishing for the first time in 17 years without Captain Phil at the helm. Dan slips into the tank and that means he owes each crewmember a case of beer. During a night break, Phil calls in to give Murray the update. He had a blood clot that went from his leg, through his heart and went to his lung! He was being treated for it, but there is a scare that there could be more. Phil tells Murray that his mother died from this happening. Murray tells Josh & Jake and lets them know that their dad was ok.

    The Wizard –

Captain Keith is on the way back to port for an offload. All of a sudden, the alarm goes off. The pipe that moves fresh ocean water to the tanks burst and Keith & the crew try to plug the leak. This means that less water is going to the crab, and is flowing into the engine room instead. Fortunately, they patch it up with a temporary solution. The crab will make it to port. When they get there for the offload, Keith tells us that greenhorn Moi is finished working on the Wizard. He calls him in and does the deed. The primary reason for firing Moi was due to his being insubordinate to Keith and getting in his face on the last trip. Questioning the Captain is a no-no. Moi is disappointed and would like to find work on another boat. Then we’re introduced to greenhorn Cooper Weatherby.

This season (now officially the longest in it’s 4 years) has had a lot of drama and cliffhangers. Captain Phil’s situation was probably the most scary of them all. As a viewer, you know the captains so well now. The difference with this show is that when someone’s health is in question it’s real. You’re not writing off a character. And Phil is a laid back, caring man who is impossible not to care about. It seems that he will be ok and I’m very happy for him and his family. Did this episode have the same effect with you? What do you think?
