One of my favorite things about Gilmore Girls is that every single year, there is a great finale. Now, there really has only been one main CLIFFHANGER and that was in season 5, but each finale provides viewers with a sense of future for the characters as well as a sense of closure for the things that happened during the season preceding it. The season 1 finale did just that. In “Love, Daisies, and Troubadours,” the girls are both figuring out some things that they need to deal with, but the entire episode provided a sense of hope for them. I was very pleased by this finale, and I’m not ashamed to say that I did shed a few tears in the process.

The episode opens with Luke fixing Lorelai’s house very early in the morning. This upsets Lorelai because she needs sleep to keep her “pretty.” He’s avoiding Rachel (his current girlfriend) most likely due to fear. It’s a terribly funny scene because if any of you have ever watched the show, it’s completely apparent that Lorelai cannot function without her first cup of coffee.

By this time in the series, the characters are all clearly developed, and viewers have all come to know and love them. Kirk provided the light humor, especially toward the end of this episode. Michel was no clearly the grumpy desk clerk who in this episode is overcome with ennui, metaphysical angst. Knowing that this is the finale, something this light and funny was needed to open the episode. Sookie is still the loveable best friend who is so much fun to watch, and I’m not sure if I speak for many other people, but I would love for her to be my friend. The Gilmore parents aren’t in this episode but the relationship between them and Lorelai vs. them and Rory is developed. Luke is torn between his feelings for Rachel who is giving it back, and Lorelai who is involved with Max. Rory is in love with Dean, but they aren’t together and haven’t been for a few episodes. Basically, a lot is happening in this episode.

I’m going to try to make my summary short and sweet for you all:
    • Max is jealous of Luke.
    • Rachel is jealous of Lorelai.
    • Max and Lorelai fight, he proposes to end the fight.
    • Lorelai says that a proposal has to be magical.
    • Rory gets the courage to go into the market, but Dean is not there.
    • Tristan asks Rory to a concert, she says no. He tells Paris she said yes and now Rory is feuding with the girls again.
    • Rachel breaks up with Luke and leaves town.
    • Rory makes a speech at the Town Meeting about expression, meant for Dean.
    • Dean comes to Rory’s school, she tells him she loves him and they kiss.
    • Kirk delivers 1,000 yellow daisies to the Independence Inn. They are from Max and it’s his wedding proposal to Lorelai.
    • The girls meet in the middle of the Town Square cheering and smiling for real for the first time in forever.

So, that’s the end of another early episode review. Please join me next week when I review “Teach Me Tonight,” near the end of the second season. I would also love your feedback on which episode you want me to review, because I have some favorites, but I would love to review your favorites as well. E-mail me anytime at Faye@thetwocentscorp.com. Let me know what you think. Put your TwoCents in the comments! Have a wonderful beginning of the summer.
