I remember when I first saw this episode. I had been watching the show with a friend on DVD about 3 years ago and I remember hearing about Christopher but thinking that I’d never see him because a lot of shows do that. They mention someone over and over, but we never get to meet them. When I saw the episode title for “Christopher Returns,” I couldn’t wait! We watched the other episodes on that disc, and at the end of the episode before, “That Damn Donna Reed,” Christopher definitely returned! I remember thinking that he was cute, and the motorcycle thing just threw me over the edge! I couldn’t wait to start the next episode.

I remember when I first saw this episode. I had been watching the show with a friend on DVD about 3 years ago and I remember hearing about Christopher but thinking that I’d never see him because a lot of shows do that. They mention someone over and over, but we never get to meet them. When I saw the episode title for “Christopher Returns,” I couldn’t wait! We watched the other episodes on that disc, and at the end of the episode before, “That Damn Donna Reed,” Christopher definitely returned! I remember thinking that he was cute, and the motorcycle thing just threw me over the edge! I couldn’t wait to start the next episode.
Rory was definitely excited to see her father, but Lorelai on the other hand, wasn’t so sure about it. She kept interrogating him on his intentions for his visit. He says that he wants to be a part of Rory’s life, but Lorelai can tell that there is no guarantee. He finds out that Rory is dating Dean, and a “father figure” somewhat emerges. He plays the whole “they grow up so fast” thing, which to me seems fake. But his love for Rory isn’t questionable at all.
The entire town is mystified by the presence of someone new. They are all very cryptic, coming up to Christopher, looking at him from afar, and immediately telling all their friends. It’s hilarious! As Christopher says, “I was stalked by a few townspeople.”
This episode provides for one of my favorite moments between Lorelai and Luke. She’s sitting in the diner and he’s pouring her coffee, and the dialogue is priceless. Luke had just seen Christopher and Rory at his and Dean’s softball game.
LUKE: So Rory was at the game today.
LORELAI: Oh yeah.
LUKE: Yeah she was with some guy.
LORELAI: Dean.
LUKE: No, I know that punk. Some older guy.
LORELAI: Oh, that would’ve been her dad.
LUKE: Really? So that’s uh....
LORELAI: The guy who impregnated me with Rory - yes.
LUKE: Oh, well, he did a good job.
LORELAI: Impregnating me with Rory?
LUKE: Now this has taken a very weird turn.
While at the diner however, Lorelai gets a call from Emily telling her that she has invited Christopher’s parents over for Friday Night Dinner. Now, you have to realize that this is the first time that the entire family will be together since Rory was a baby. I knew right then and there that it was going to be interesting.
They didn’t even get to dinner. Right away, tensions were high and Lorelai broke the ice by saying “I hate President Bush” and that started a yelling match between her father and Christopher’s father. Richard stuck up for Lorelai, and in the end, the Haydens left the Gilmore house. Nobody was happy, and everyone went his or her separate ways. Lorelai and Christopher ended up having a moment of reminiscence on Lorelai’s balcony. They ended up sleeping with each other, making for a very awkward situation for everyone around them.
Finally, the end of the episode included a scene between Lorelai and Christopher where he asked her to marry him. She denied. The final scene was the goodbye between the girls and Christopher. It was bittersweet, but a good ending to a horrible situation.
