I like fantasy and science fiction. I wouldn’t consider myself the type to dress up as a Tribble and attend a Star Trek convention, mind you, but notice I actually know the word “Tribble.” I’m what you call a weekday fangirl. I love things like Lord of the Rings and anything by Joss Whedon, but I’m not here to convert you. I’m here to introduce you to what I think is the greatest series of all time: Firefly. Firefly set the stage for such greats as Battlestar Galactica, and like most great shows (My So-Called Life, anyone?), was canceled after just one season.

Now, “greatest series of all time” is a bold claim, but if you stick with me through this Summer BookClub series here at The Two Cents, you will at least gain the appreciation for one of the most under-appreciated shows ever. I’m going to review my five favorite episodes in hopes that you will discover this little gem and enjoy Joss Whedon’s Opus.
Firefly is a space western. You heard me. It follows a group of outlaws (with a collective heart of gold) through a universe full of both good and really, really bad. They pull jobs and fight The Man where they can. The crew of Serenity (a Firefly-class spaceship) constitutes the main characters:
Nathan Fillion Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, a former soldier in the Independents army (they lost) with a chip on his shoulder
Gina Torres Zoë Washburne, First Officer, former soldier under Mal’s command in the war.
Alan Tudyk Hoban 'Wash' Washburne, ship’s pilot, Zoë’s husband, and all-around goof-ball.
Morena Baccarin Inara Serra, a Registered Companion which is more Geisha than call-girl.
Adam Baldwin Jayne Cobb, the ship’s heavy, is in it more for the money than the morals.
Jewel Staite Kaylee Frye, engineer of Serenity, holds a torch for the ship’s doctor.
Sean Maher Dr. Simon Tam, the ship’s doctor and fugitive who is trying to hide his sister from The Alliance.
Summer Glau River Tam, Simon’s sister, an unstable savant who was experimented on by The Alliance.
Ron Glass Shepherd Book, a preacher just along for the ride. Maybe.
If you are willing, I’m able. The first review slated for next week will be the pilot episode entitled Serenity. It was not aired first (one of the initial missteps of Fox in regards to the show), but last. Don’t ask me to explain it. I don’t understand it myself. So I hope you join me on this little trip. It’ll be worth it.
