We’re back in the middle of Opilio crab season on the Bering Sea. We have a rescue mission to catch up with, some well needed repairs and a Captain blows up.
Coast Guard Copter 6035
When last we left the latest Coast Guard rescue mission, they were flying into terrible head winds with low gas and a fisherman having seizures. They were flying into Cold Bay, which was much further than St Paul. Since the concern was so great with the fuel situation, they decide to turn around the bird from it’s present course and head out to St Paul. They get back safely, as does the patient. Ignoring the order to go to Cold Bay may have saved their lives.

Cornelia Marie
Captain Phil is trying to navigate the Cornelia Marie through the storm on only one engine. Last episode he lost the use one of the engines. Phil decides that he wants to anchor near a small landmass to try to wait out the storm. Josh goes on watch while Phil & the rest of the crew sleep. However, a part of the cable snaps that holds the anchor. They fire up the bad engine to relieve some of the tension. Phil still plans to remain where they are until they see smaller seas. The next day, Phil makes it to Dutch Harbor to repair the engine and the anchor line. They can’t get a good prognosis on what’s wrong with the engine, so Phil has to decide where or not to take apart the engine for more money, or fish on one engine until the season ends. It isn’t easy being a captain.
The Northwestern
Captain Sig starts to pull the pots that he dropped in the storm last night. Fortunately, the pots have done well with solid numbers. Edgar’s quick work avoids a potential disaster. A coil of line fell off one of the pots and got washed down with the rejected crabs. When this happens, the rope could get caught up in the propeller, and the power of the prop could have yanked the pot right into the deckhands. Luckily, Edgar had noticed it and quickly pulled up the rope. Later, it’s determined the crew has worked 24 hours straight. They’ve been taking in an average of 675 crab per pot. He ends up pulling in 95 thousand dollars worth of Opies. Not bad for a random drop. This makes the Northwestern one of the leaders this season.
The Time Bandit
The Time Bandit is now cruising through calmer seas. They are pulling pots and the counts aren’t where Captain Andy wants them to be. He went on the advice of Co-Captain Jonathan, who had good success in these grounds previously. They have a lighthearted debate over who’s running the ship. Andy, of course is the Captain for Opie season, and Jonathan is the skipper for King Crab season. Later on, Andy drops some pots in an area that they call “Mr Magoo”. This is because the trail somewhat looks like the profile of the character of the same name. Andy is very pleased to get huge numbers from these pots. The money is good, and so are the bragging rights he spouts off to his brother.
The Wizard
After braving the storm, and a quick run back to Dutch for a repair on the hydraulics, Captain Keith is pulling his first pot from the string. He’s not having a lot of luck with unacceptable crab or not enough. He’s very upset to see more than one pot come up with holes in them. After Keith gets past his boiling point, he orders the crew inside to criticize them for their work ethic. After the pep talk, Keith feels that Lenny, his long time deckhand may have been insulted. He calls him up to explain & apologize to him. Lenny is fine with everything, but greenhorn Moi is not. He comes up to the wheelhouse and tries to debate Keith on his workload. It’s a no-no to question the captain of any vessel. Keith orders him out of the wheelhouse, and Moi ends up stewing down below. Keith decides to call his son to blow off some steam and get a weather report. He’s happy to hear from his son, but hears that another storm is coming.
I couldn’t wait to see this episode after the cliffhanger last week. I’m happy that at least this possible tragedy was avoided. I liked seeing Captain Keith’s tirade to the crew. It motivated them to do what Keith wanted them to. And it was nice to see Captain Sig get back on track with the big numbers he was getting. Did you like this episode? I hope you’re at least are happy it isn’t January.
