Dead Like Me
Summer Review Intro

You think you’re having a bad day? Imagine getting taken out by a toilet seat from space on your first day of work at a temp job. Fortunately for George Lass, that’s not where her story ends. The first time I watched the pilot for Dead Like Me, it completely blew me away. In the span of two days, nearly everyone I knew had been forced to watch it and it was a unanimous feeling of “oh, where has this show been and how can I see more?” Dead Like Me has the trifecta of what I look for in a great hour of television: it’s funny, touching and intense. It’s also incredibly addictive. I really believe it’s impossible to watch just one episode and beyond that, I think it’s impossible to watch an episode from the first season only once.

The show comes to us from creator Bryan Fuller, who is also responsible for Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies. If you’ve seen either of those two shows, you know what you get from Bryan Fuller isn’t your usual hour of television. The characters are so fiercely inventive that you can tell from the first few minutes you’re watching something truly special. There’s a magic in his shows that is always present and almost tangible so much so that it feels like you’ve never seen anything like it before.

What I’ll be doing this summer is rewatching and reviewing eleven out of the thirteen episodes from the first season. If you’ve never seen Dead Like Me before, I so strongly urge you to give it a shot and if you have seen it, don’t you miss it? I know I do, so let’s rewatch it together. It’s a quirky, stylistically beautiful show that doesn’t disappoint. I promise.

    The characters:
Georgia “George” Lass – Ellen Muth
    Rube – Mandy Patinkin
    Mason – Callum Blue
    Roxy – Jasmine Guy
    Daisy – Laura Harris
    Betty – Rebecca Gayheart
Delores Herbig, George’s boss – Christine Willes
Joy, George’s mom – Cynthia Stevenson
Reggie, George’s sister – Britt McKillip
Clancy, George’s dad – Greg Kean
    UnGeorge – Laura Boddington

  2. I have never watched this show... mostly because I have heard of it's addictive nature. I am looking forward to learning more about it and, perhaps, surrendering to the fix. :)

  3. They are also making a movie. They have replaced Mandy Patinkin with Desmond from lost. Should be interesting. I was a huge fan of this show and sad to see showtime dropped the ball on this one.

  4. Rachel, definitely surrender to the addiction. Trust me, it'll be worth it. :) For some reason, it slipped my mind to post it in the intro but I'm going to start with the pilot. Give it a shot! I'm sure you'll like it a lot.

Mat, I've heard about the movie and I'm pretty sure I saw a trailer awhile back. I love Desmond in a ridiculous way, which is probably the only reason I'm behind Henry Ian Cusick being in the movie as much as I am. We'll see how it goes. And you're absolutely right, Showtime just can't recognize what great TV is.
