"Dawson's Creek" DVD Review - "Kiss"

Dawson's Creek
Kiss (formerly "Prelude to a Kiss")

DVD Season 1

This is one of my favorite episodes, and it has nothing to do with Dawson and Jen's first kiss, or Pacey and Tamara's scandalous videotape. It's purely because I adore Anderson Crawford and it breaks my heart that he never showed up again.

Anderson Crawford (Ian Bohen) is the violin-playing Gap-ad-pretty rich boy who gives Joey her first kiss. But that happens later. After some witty banter when they meet, Joey pretends to be a Choate-educated tourist named Deborah Carson. She dresses up and they go sailing. She gets an inadvertent guilt trip when Anderson talks about how much he values honesty. She almost gets caught when Anderson shows up at her family's restaurant, The Icehouse, but Jen covers for her. Then she screws up the location of a restaurant, but Anderson lets it go and gives her his number anyway, and her first kiss. Bodie comes to pick her up, and when she discovers her mistake, she tosses the number out the car window. Sigh. 10 years later, that still bugs me.

Joey's first kiss happens while she's acting, but Dawson's first kiss happens in spite of him trying to script the whole thing. Dawson wants his and Jen's first kiss to be cinematically perfect, down to the soundtrack, and he plans to stage the whole thing while filming his movie at scenic ruins. The weekend starts to fall apart when he's forced to take verbal abuse from Nellie and watch Cliff hit on Jen as a crewmember for Helmets of Glory, but he ends up saving an important shot. That night, he and Jen set up at the ruins to shoot a scene where Jen's character mourns the sea monster. He tries to film their first kiss, but Jen catches on. She tells him that he is too eager and she can't live up to the pressure of his perfect kiss. They hide when they think they've been caught trespassing, and Dawson finally lets the moment happen.

Pacey and Tamara continue their rendezvous under the guise of tutoring. Pacey expects some "positive reinforcement" for getting his work done, but Tamara gives him a harsh reality check about making his first time a quickie on her desk. Instead, they sneak off the ruins and Pacey loses his virginity with Dawson's camera still rolling.

Alright, readers, tell me what you think about all this cinematic kissing by leaving your Two Cents in the comments! Next up is "Discovery".

  2. 20 years later and I’m bothered too! I loved Anderson and am very bothered he never showed back up. Also very weird to look it up and see the actor as an adult and to recognize him from other shows I’ve watched!!!!
