Angel - Summer DVD Bookclub

Angel
Summer Review Intro

First there was Buffy--the little vampire slayer show that could. It took the critics by surprise when it survived for 7 seasons and became such a popular cult hit that it spawned that rarest of all creatures in television: a successful spin off.

Angel was billed, at least initially, as a more grown up show than Buffy. It was based on the further adventures of Buffy's vampire-with-a-soul boyfriend, Angel. Angel, played by David Boreanaz, nobly left Sunnydale when it became clear that any extended time in Buffy's company would result in more brooding than you could throw a crucifix at or in the return of Angel's soulless, psychotic, alter ego Angelus.

Unable to safely be with the slayer of his dreams, Angel moved to Los Angeles where he decided to atone for his sins by helping the hopeless through Angel Investigations. Joined by fellow Buffy alums: Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) and Wesley (Alexis Denisof) and a few other sidekicks: Gunn (J. August Richards), Fred (Amy Acker), and Lorne (Andy Hallett). The show gave us 5 years of sexy vampires, rogue demon hunters, reformed slayers, and even a god or two.

So what should I recap for our Angel Summer DVD club? Should it be a season? Should we pick a theme, such as Angel's heroic journey or the irritating Powers That Be? Should we recap episodes involving a specific character?

These are your recaps, so you decide. Give me your Two Cents by commenting below or by sending me an e-mail.

  1. Oh, Angel, I loved that show too! HMM, it is hard to say what the best way to review it would be. I think we should review Angel's heroic journey, since it is all about him :)

  2. What about doing the last season? A LOT of stuff went down then that really shaped Angel... That way, you can avoid the whole Connor thing, too. I hated Connor! Except his final episode...

  4. I love Angel! And also hate Connor! I'd like to see a Wesley-centric arc--he really grew over the course of the series.

Can't wait to see what you come up with...

  5. The last season would be a great recap. That way we avoid the whole Cordy/Connor thing and see where the series ended.
