It’s Sam’s birthday, and all she wants is to have Todd to herself. ..which means he has to break up with Chloe in time to be Sam’s escort for her first (memorable) birthday party. It’s Sam’s birthday, and all she wants is to have Todd to herself. ..which means he has to break up with Chloe in time to be Sam’s escort for her first (memorable) birthday party. There’s only one problem: Chloe doesn’t go down easily. Sam finds herself doing battle with an adversary worthy of pre-amnesia Sam. Can she beat Chloe at her old games, or will she be flying solo at her own party?

After convincing Todd to break up with Chloe, Sam heads to the coffee shop, where she informs Dena that Regina will be throwing Sam a birthday party, and that Dena is in charge of the guest list. Dena is, of course, giddy at the thought of the responsibility she’s been given, and plans to invite only a handful of people, excluding Todd. Sam tells her that Todd is breaking up with Chloe, but only a few minutes later, she witnesses Todd kissing Chloe outside the shop.

Sam confronts Todd about the non-breakup, and he responds that Chloe has a dying aunt in the hospital, and he doesn’t want to add to her pain. Sam tells him that he’s putting Chloe’s feelings before hers because she’s feeling vulnerable, too. But Sam’s also feeling vulnerable—she’s turning one! Meanwhile, Andrea visits Regina to inform her that the party will be held in the city, and not at Regina’s, where they’d “play twister and watch a slideshow of your trip to Akron.” Howard backs Andrea, and Regina caves, but insists on doing the food. After all, “who doesn’t love Ambrosia salad?”

Dena’s having a hard time finding people to come to Sam’s party. Sam realizes they’re lying to get out of something they don’t want to do. That realization triggers a Bad Sam flashback…and the epiphany that Chloe’s employing tricks that Bad Sam has recommended in the past. Sam hurries over to the hospital to prove that Chloe doesn’t have a sick aunt. Problem is, Chloe does have a sick aunt, and now she thinks Sam is genuinely concerned about the aunt, and about Chloe’s well-being. D’oh!

Regina and Andrea have a little bonding moment as Regina prepares the food at Andrea’s apartment. Regina’s jealous of Andrea’s jet-setting life, and Andrea’s jealous that Regina has a man to hang her pot-rack. But they find common ground in the knowledge that they both buy Good Housekeeping’s annual holiday ideas issue. Scary, but fun. I like these two together.

Todd finally breaks up with Chloe, and Chloe drops by the Newlys’ house to chat with Sam about it. Sam’s a little scared. She informs Sam that Todd has a pattern…he doesn’t break up with an old girlfriend unless he’s got a new one. He dated Chloe for weeks before he broke up with Bad Sam. Sam runs back to Todd to confront him, and they end up having to hide in the closet, screwball –style, when Chloe comes home unexpectedly. Chloe catches on and leaves, upset that she’s been betrayed by both Todd and her new “friend,” Sam. Once Chloe’s gone, Sam agrees that maybe she and Todd are both too rotten for even each other. She arrives at her party alone. To her surprise, Todd makes an appearance, behaving as though they’d never met, and asking for her number.

So, how about your Two Cents? Are Sam and Todd meant to be? Should Regina and Andrea start a catering business on the side? Can you wait until next season to find out?

    Best lines:

Sam: I don’t like kazoos, they sound like bees.

Dena: Is he gonna break up with her to be with you?
Sam: Uh huh, yeah, not because she’s a total loon, and emotional, and a little unstable. You know what? Switch with me, I don’t want my back to the door.

Regina (answering the door): Oh, Andrea! (Yells to Howard) Honey, do we need any drinking done?

Dena: Hey, Frank. I was thinking how it must be gratifying, doing your job, being such an important part of all these people’s lives coming and going here…
Frank: There’s talk of replacing me with a motion-sensing mat.
Dena: Do you like birthday cake?

Howard: Well, I’m sorry I don’t dress like the internet.

Howard: Sammy, I can’t go to this thing tonight looking like a hayseed. So, I’m off to the Suit Barn.

Regina: Howard and I haven’t been anywhere but Pensacola for years. He won’t fly. He hates to take his shoes off in front of people.

Andrea: Why didn’t you tell me? I know fifteen Eurotrash partiers who could be here in five minutes.
Dena: But it’s her birthday party, you can’t fill it with strangers!
    Andrea: She has amnesia!
    Dena: Start dialing.

  2. I'm so sad I missed this episode! My local ABC affiliate is duking it out with Dish Network so I don't have ABC right now!

Guess I'll watch it on the interwebs.

    Great recap Leigh!

  4. Awesome recap! This show is fantastic.

Two Cents: YES to the catering business, if it means more Regina! Sam/Todd - if she doesn't take him, I will, so up to her. And bring on season 2!

Great quotes picked out, I love the kazoo one, the internet one, and Howard being afraid to travel :)
