“Wow!” that was my general reaction when I say those all too familiar letters appear on that black screen, stating that it actually was the last scene. I am still trying to wrap my head around what I have seen in these past two hours. And that is not an easy task.

It’s all starts pretty innocently with two boys who are shooting a BB gun scaring a mail delivery woman. They run along and when they see a man lying on an air bed in his pool, seemingly relaxing. The boys shoot the air bed with the BB gun and he sinks to the bottom of the pool. William Deckers’ death is ruled a heart attack by natural cause.

NCIS Director Jenny Shepard knows the man personally and she takes Ziva and Tony as her protection detail with her to LA to attend the funeral. While she is there she overhears a man asking for someone, using a code name ‘Oshimaida’ that they used when she was undercover in Europe ten years ago. She suspects that she is in trouble and takes some pictures of the man and the woman that picks him up in a car. Jenny sends the pictures to Abby and asks her to ID the man, she tells her not to tell anyone.

She tells Tony and Ziva to take the rest of the day off, to enjoy their stay until they leave the next day. Jenn asks for the car keys and leaves the funeral.

At the NCIS headquarters we find a very confused McGee, when he enters the bullpen and finds Ducky and Abby sitting on Tony and Ziva’s chairs impersonating Tony and Ziva perfectly. Abby is playing with a knife while Ducky says something and then realizes that Gibbs is standing behind him. The only thing that failed in that scene was the head slap. Though Gibbs would never hit Ducky out of respect for the man but he sure was asking for it. Even Palmer acted like Gibbs, though he sure escaped quickly when Gibbs returned to his table.

Jen Shepard calls Mike Franks ( Gibbs’ boss when he was a probie ), she says that she trusts him because Gibbs trusts him with his life. Jen doesn’t want any of her agents involved in what is coming next. She explains to him what happened in Europe ten years ago, while Gibbs, Decker and Jen where working undercover in Paris. They thought that they had gotten away clean.

At the same time Gibbs is taking another look at the death of ‘La Grenouille’, Eventually he finds out that Jen did in fact shoot ‘La Grenouille’ with the help of Abby who finds a certain marking on the bullet.

Jen and Mike go out to investigate Deckers house, hoping that there was something left that can lead them further. But instead they find Sasha, the very young wife of William Decker in the closet. She has a message for NCIS Director Jen Shepard not knowing that she is actually speaking to her she gives the message. Jen tells her to get away, gives her the keys to her car and tells her to leave immediately for Nevada.

Ziva knows that something is not right, but Tony tells her that it is nothing. That she is probably on a date with someone. Ziva wants him to call the Director, to see if she is okay. When they have called her Ziva is not satisfied and asks him to track Jen’s rental car.

Tony and Ziva find the car, along with the lifeless body of Sasha. Jenny is following the lead that Sasha gave her. Mike and Jen arrive in the Diner that William Decker owned out in the dessert. They find the clues and talk about what has happened in the past. Jen’s illness and her and Gibbs’ past in Europe. Ziva and Tony call Jen once again and after being blown off by her again, Ziva is sure that Jen is lying to her. They compromise on asking McGee to find the Director by tracing her cell. He tracks her down and they speed of to go to Jen. Ziva and Tony get lost and when they finally arrive at the diner they find Jenny surrounded by four shooters, dead. When they find her lifeless body her cellphone starts ringing, it is Gibbs.

He arrives a day later, he is met by Tony and Ziva who are collecting evidence and tells them that he told them to wait for him. Vance comes out of the diner saying that he told them what to do. He says that Jenny put up a hell of a fight but that she took heavy fire, she was shot at least twice.

Abby and McGee are bickering about wether Ziva and Tony are working a case or not, when Tony sends McGee pictures of tire treads. At that moment Ducky comes in when he receives the phone call from Gibbs telling him that Jenny died. He at first thinks that the disease that she has took her life when Gibbs tells him that she was shot. He has the terrible task of telling Abby and McGee that she has died and that Gibbs needs their help. Abby finally breaks down in her lab, McGee tries to comfort her and tells her that it is okay.

The evidence starts adding up and Gibbs finally recognizes the picture of a woman but before anyone can ask who she is he has left already. He sets up a meeting with the mystery woman at Jen’s house. He is waiting in her study for the woman, but when she arrives he is standing by the fireplace while his gun is on the desk. Mike Franks has followed him apparently and shoots the woman in the back, while she holds Gibbs at gunpoint.

Mere minutes later Vance stops his car in front of Gibbs and Franks. Gibbs tells him to take care of the problem which ever way he wants. Behind a store window a news coverage is shown of a mayor fire at the house of a the ‘Director of a Federal Agency’.

Jen’s death is ruled an accident, a gas leak which ignited into a huge fire at her Georgetown home. She died due to smoke inhalation. Director Vance has been named to succeed her and his first action was to destroy a file. And to call Gibbs, DiNozzo, McGee and David into his office.

“Officer David, your liaison position has been terminated.”

“Agent DiNozzo, you've been reassigned as agent afloat on the USS Ronald Reagan. Go home and pack your bags, you're flying out tomorrow.”

“Agent McGee, you're being transferred to the Cyber Crimes Unit.”

“Agent Gibbs, meet your new team.”

And then the screen fades to black and it’s the season’s end.

My first reaction is something that I can’t repeat here, but I guess you all had the same reaction especially if you like the show as much as I do. The second reaction was; ‘What will happen to the team?’ and I am sure that you are asking yourself the same question. Are the writers just yanking our chain? Or do they really think that the show will overcome this very bold move?

I loved that we seen (and heard) some more scenes about Paris. It has been one of those scenes that got a lot of fan’s minds going when it comes to fanfiction. I am just disappointed that we will never hear more tales about Ziva and Jen working together before NCIS. I have always hoped that we would get to see some flashbacks in future episodes.

I am so happy that we got to see Jen in action, showing us exactly why she was the Director of NCIS. Of course like she said she had done some things in the past that she was not proud off. But at least we knew that she did everything in her power to protect her agents and more.

Lauren Holly portrayed her like a Director of NCIS should be portrayed, as a strong and independent woman. And who ever tries to follow her, wether it is Vance or someone else he or she has some big shoes to fill.

A big thank you goes to the amazing cast and crew of NCIS, I know they will probably never read this and that doesn’t matter. I know that they have provided me and lots of other people with countless hours of viewing pleasure. And for that I want to thank them. Those who did their last episode, thank you for your amazing job you will be missed.

So tell me what did you think of this episode? Did you like it just as much as I did? And of course are you looking forward to the next season? Do you really think that we will get a completely renewed team next season?

  2. Gibbs came back from retirement for Jenny and his team. There is no way he would continue working with a different team. Either everyone will be back (minus Jenny, obviously) or the show is ending. I really hope for the first option.

  3. Since there is an order for 28 episodes next season (24 regular season eps and the 4 that we missed this season ) I am pretty sure that the team will be back within a few episodes if not in the first episode.
