In a nutshell, this episode was the coming of age for Dr. Archie Morris. He's been somewhat of a wiener from the get go, but this week he really stepped up to the plate and became a man. Oh, and he wasn't the only one, but more about that in a minute.
The show begins and we see that it's a busy day in the ER. Sam, Gates, and Morris are waiting for a chopper to set down with some people from a car accident. The lady, Rebecca, is on a stretcher, but the dude, Daniel, has refused on back brace – what a stud. He has a laceration on his arm, and that's apparently his only injury. As he's getting out of the helicopter, he drops his gun. That's right, he's bringing a firearm into the ER. This can't end well,
Rebecca tells Morris that she and Daniel were on their way to see his mother. Apparently she has cancer and won't make it though the night – so they were in a hurry. Daniel is fine and okay to go, but Rebecca has some bleeding around her liver. She will be fine, so Morris tells Daniel to sign the admit papers for her and to leave and go see his mom. Call the hospital when you get there, and I'll update you, Morris promises. Daniel can't help but notice that the ER is starting to fill up with police, which is not because of him at all, but because of a hit-and-run drunk driving accident brought in earlier, but when you're walking around the ER with a gun shoved down the back of your pants, you sort of lose perspective, I guess.
At the desk, Frank is watching TV and they have released the sketches of a modern-day-Bonnie-and-Clyde who held up a jewelery store that day and made off with about $40K. Uh-oh. Guess who? Well, Danny-boy heads back to Trauma 1 to fetch is girl so they can jet, but she's crashing. Seems Rebecca has blown a clot and is bleeding out into her belly. Neela is there and saying that she won't do surgery. She can't be fixed. Daniel pulls his gun and tells Neela and Morris and a couple of interns that they will indeed operate and they will do it right here, right now.
So this is Archie's time to shine. He talks to this man. Finds out why his is doing this. (Hint, hint: An Adjusted Rate Mortgage doubled his house payment and now he's in foreclosure. He needed the dough.) We come to see that he's not a bad man, maybe a little (a lot) emotionally unstable right now, but not bad. If only he didn't have that darn gun.
Gates come in about this time looking for something he needs for his patient and Morris signals to him that Daniel has a gun in his pocket. So Gates, being the tough guy that he is, tries to knock him out with an instrument tray. What? Gimme a break. He was so close, why didn't he just tackle that SOB? Daniel drops the gun, a scuffle ensues and Daniel gets the gun back, which he then fires at Neela who is trying to escape (he misses). Way to go, Uncle Jesse.
All the ruckus causes the ER to be evacuated and Daniel's hopes of getting out of there with no one knowing he was the robber is dashed. But Archie is still talking to him. He's so calm. And Rebecca is dying. Archie tells him to say goodbye because once he stops doing compressions, she's gone. The risk here is, of course, that once she dies, he's going to kill both Archie and Neela for not saving her. But what can they do? Daniel lays the gun down beside him and says goodbye to his girl. It was very sad. Crime doesn't pay, kids. Archie asks Daniel to hand him the gun and he does. I know I'm not the only one who thought Daniel would end up blowing out his own brains, right? As soon as Archie has the gun, a police sniper's bullet pegs Daniel right in the chest. The End. Kind of rough justice there in the windy city, I'd say.
Like I mentioned earlier, Morris wasn't the only one to step up to the plate. As all this was unfolding in the ER, Pratt was visiting Bettina in the cancer center. She isn't thrilled to see him. Why? She explains to him that he was never deep enough, he never tried to get to know her. Their relationship was too superficial. He admits that he has been treating his personal life like he has his patients: don't get too attached. But he's there now, and he doesn't have to be. He's there because he's in love with her. He kisses her on the forehead and she caresses his face. Yay! I love it when love wins.
So that's my take. What did you think?
I also thought Daniel was gonna kill himself, and then was pissed at the sniper for taking the shot AFTER the situation had been diffused. That's ER for ya!
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, my husband was angry watching the previews for this episode because "Carter went to all that trouble years ago to get metal detectors and security at all the entrances to the ER... how would a gun make it in!?!?" Calm down, man, it got in via helicopter. Geeze.
