Dr. Kelso is getting drummed out of Sacred Heart because he is past the standard retirement age. His only wish is that he could have ended things on his own terms. As Carla and Elliot try to rally the troops in his defense (if they get enough people to go to the board meeting in support of Kelso, the board might cave), Dr. Kelso reminisces about his career. It’s like a clip show without the clips.

Meanwhile, Dr. Cox has a few problems of his own. He has a patient he hasn’t been able to diagnose in 2 years (2 years!) and JD and Turk have vowed to help him. Seriously, boys, don’t poke the bear. Cox instructs the two to take the patient’s urine sample to the lab. JD and Turk then promptly lose the sample. This is gonna get ugly.

As he talks about his 40-year career to a frightened-looking intern named Boone, Dr. Kelso cycles through several clichés regarding the hospital including (but not limited to) “once the ball starts rolling, it’s hard to stop it” and “you’ll find more questions than answers.” Another he touches on is the fact that most success in the hospital deals with plain old dumb luck.

Speaking of dumb luck, JD and Turk find the lost urine sample which has mysteriously turned purple. A little Google later and the pair diagnose the patient with a rare genetic disorder that is manageable but has no cure. It took them three hours to do what Cox hasn’t been able to do in 2 years. By the way, the disorder (intermittent porphyria) was linked to vampirism centuries ago because of the symptoms: sensitivity to light, paleness, and turning into a bat. I made up that last one.

Carla and Elliot can’t find enough people to go to the board meeting to save Kelso’s job. Why? Because Dr. Cox won’t help (he wants the job of Chief). Everyone is scared of Dr. Cox, so they won’t help, either. They go to Dr. Cox and plead with him to reconsider. He won’t of course, because he is still irked that JD and Turk diagnosed his patient. But when Dr. Cox informs the patient of said diagnosis, he is surprised at the patient’s relieved reaction: finally knowing what is happening makes things better. Dr. Cox realizes that the “enemy you know is better than the one you don’t” and he agrees to help Dr. Kelso.

The board meeting is a success and Dr. Kelso is told he can keep his job. Funny thing happens, though. Remember Kelso’s only regret? That he couldn’t end his career on his own terms? Well, now he can. He tells the board president to stuff it and walks out with his painting. On the way, he thanks Ted for everything. Sincerely, Awwww! He dances out of the hospital and drives off into the sunset.

Thank you, Dr. Kelso. We’ll miss you. You, too Ken Jenkins.

My favorite moment of the episode: When Ted finds out that Dr. Kelso will be leaving, he runs naked through the hospital shouting “I’m free!” Unfortunately for Ted, he gets hit by the Janitor’s van out in the parking lot and takes a chunk out of his tongue (requiring 23 stitches). It was awesome and quite disturbing. Not to mention squishy.

So what do YOU think? Will the next Chief be worse than Kelso? What the heck was with that whole sea lion/otter thing? Were JD and Turk singing the Scrubs theme song? Will you miss Kelso? Give us your Two Cents. We’ll use it to buy ourselves something pretty.

Next week: “My Waste of Time”

  3. Hey, there Anonymous! The song was "Little Victories" by Matt Nathanson. I liked it a lot, too!

  4. I loved it when the Janitor offered to go to the meeting with his "people", and Elliot and Carla turned him down because, Who cares? You're the janitor! Then five minutes later, they were begging him to come because no one else would!
