Of course not. Instead the great leader of Dunder Mifflin Scranton manages to find love-at-first-site in a catalog. Further depressing himself after the failed dinner party, which resulted in him leaving Jan.

What is a great way to cheer yourself up after breaking up with someone? Go shopping! Where does Michael Scott go shopping? An office supply catalog to find a new chair. Does he find a chair? Of course not. Instead the great leader of Dunder Mifflin Scranton manages to find love-at-first-site in a catalog. Further depressing himself after the failed dinner party, which resulted in him leaving Jan.
If Michael can find a new chair, Pam gets his chair, and Creed gets Pam’s chair. Creed explains in his talking head that then he’ll have two chairs and then there will be one more to go. That makes no sense, but it is so Creed. Unfortunately musical chairs will have to wait because Michael is distracted by an attractive model sitting in the office chair catalog. This prompts Michael to order his employees to submit the name of an eligible bachelorette on a business card for him to rebound to after his separation from Jan.
After receiving the index cards, Michael makes a call to Kevin’s suggestion, “Wendy, a hot and juicy red head.” Michael calls Wendy’s fast food restaurant. Nice job Kevin. Dwight finds Michael very frustrated by the cards and promises Michael that he will find the chair model that Michael fancies. Dwight was successful! He called the furniture store, that led to the ad agency, that led to the photographer, that led to the modeling agency, that finally told Dwight who the chair model WAS...past tense because she died in a car accident.
Feeling sorry for Michael and his new depression of losing the love interest he never knew, Pam gives Michael the name of her landlord. Michael meets her at a coffee shop, but when she approaches him he is disappointed with her appearance and says he is not Michael. The server at the shop gave him away when his large hot chocolate with caramel and a shot of peppermint was ready. Typical Michael Scott. Even more Scott-like, he rambles on with Pam’s landlord, Margaret, controlling the conversation so much he turns her off by bringing up a cell phone picture of Jan. Icing on the cake is when Michael tells her it was great talking with her, “like talking with an old lady on the bus.”
When Jim learns that Michael had contact with Pam’s landlord, they both joke around about moving in together. Jim is more serious then Pam and she reminds him that she’s not moving in with anyone until she gets engaged again. He warns her that its coming and it’s going to blow her away. Jim wasn’t lying. During his talking head he reiterates his intent and shows us the engagement ring. After work, on their walk to the car, Jim stops and gets down on his knee. Pam stops and looks down at him with the expression of, “Is this happening right now?” Jim looks up at her and says, “Pam, will you wait for me while I tie my shoe?” Classic Jim Halpert.
We close the show with Michael feeling depressed in his office. Dwight tells him he needs to put closure on his loss. Michael agrees and Dwight offers to drive. A sensible person would assume they are talking about closure with Jan. Michael and Dwight are far from sensible. We find our duo at the grave of the late chair model and the lover Michael never knew. Fittingly, Michael serenades her with his own version of the Don McLean’s classic, “American Pie,” but with his own words. “Bye, bye Miss Chair Model lady…” Not such a classic anymore, but very much a classic Michael/Dwight duet.
A few notes about things that happened in the office this episode: Andy and Kevin teamed up to get their normal parking spaces back from the construction vehicles and were successful…Kevin and his fiancée Stacy broke up…we learn about the other tenants of Scranton Business Park – Paul Faust, Disaster Kids Ltd.; W.B. Jones, Jones Heating and Air; William Cress, Cress Tool & Dye…Michael refers to Oscar as “Oscar Mayer weiner-lover.”
This episode was a great return to the office setting and the many characters that make the show great. Last week was entertaining to see how things were going with Michael and Jan, but this week was classic “Office” humor. So, when do you think Jim will pop the question? It’ll be fun to see how many ways he finds to throw Pam off the proposal. I wonder if we’ll see more story line about Kevin being single? If you could find someone new for Kevin, what would she be like? How about Michael? If you had the chance to fill out one of those index cards, what fictional bachelorette would you choose?
