Ever since we saw the body of Rene Benoit (La Grenouille/The Frog – Episode 5x01 Bury your dead) floating in the bay next to his yacht we have been awaiting the conclusion of this storyline. And we had to wait quite a while. But the wait was rewarded with yet another mindblowing episode.

There are few shows in which characters have a strong chemistry and are strong individual characters at the same time. You can see that really well in the interrogation scenes which are held during this episode with each of the mayor characters.

McZero (as Tony referrers to McGee this episode) goes into a nervous breakdown when the computer system shuts down while he is backing up the complete database with three years worth of case files. That is a hell of a lot of information to loose maybe it is an idea to do that more often. Fornell enters the NCIS headquarters and announces that NCIS goes into complete lockdown because they are under investigation for the murder of Rene Benoit, La Grenouille.

The interrogation starts with Gibbs, Fornell questions Gibbs about the night that La Grenouille dies. Gibbs was present in NCIS Director Jenny Shepards house when she had La Grenouille under gun point. Granted the gun wasn’t loaded because La Grenouille had already taken the bullets out of it. Afterwards when Gibbs asked her if she would have killed him had the gun been loaded it was obvious, clear in her eyes and in the words that she spoke that she would have taken the chance if she had it. In the flashback you can see what happened in Jenny’s house. During the interrogation it is clear that they were not after Gibbs but that the FBI was targeting someone else in NCIS.

Jenny Shepard hands in her gun and badge and is suspended. She, like a real director should, shows no feelings when she gets relieved of her duties.
McGee does what only McGee would do, in the hallway when he walks into Gibbs on his way to the interrogation room he asks what he should say. The truth of course, McGee. Fornell and the FBI already know that McGee hacked into the CIA and that is not really a surprise, since they seem to know everything. The look on McGee’s face when Gibbs tells him that he can use his laptop when they are in Gibbs’ basement.
Ziva David the Mossad Assassin, they portray her as the mighty ninja killer. But you hardly ever see her do anything to that nature. Gibbs hands her the knife in his basement and tells her to take care of the FBI car in front of the house sends her running up the stairs with a giddy smile on her face. But Gibb’s comment - ‘Ziva, their tires, not their throats.’ – makes it clear once again that there is a lot that we don’t know about Ziva. A plotline that should be explored deeper, one with a lot of potential.

Ducky is being Ducky, he wouldn’t be himself if he hadn’t asked to autopsy the body. Though he only has pictures to talk to this time he still does it and the pictures ‘talk’ back to him. I thought that it was a known fact that he talks to the bodies in his morgue, but apparently McGee wasn’t aware of that. Ducky finds a clue, like he always does and it makes you wonder why didn’t the other ME find it when it seemed so obvious.

Abby truly did what she does best, she talked. I love it when she is rambling about nothing and everything at the same time. She kept them busy, too bad she didn’t have a bigger role in this episode.

The scene with Jeanne Benoit and Gibbs confused me, have I missed something? They where talking to each other as if they where long lost friends who coincidentally ran into each other on a sunny afternoon in the park and decided to enjoy a coffee together. Not for a second did I imagine that they where looking at Tony until Jeanne came into play as an eye witness, until she spoke his name I thought that they where after Jenny and that they used the rest of the team to get more answers to build a stronger case.

Tony was shocked, that much was obvious well who wouldn’t be especially since it was the second time that he was being investigated for murder. And both times he was innocent, framed by someone else.

The mystery is solved … but is it really? Or will there be more?
I wonder, I am not yet convinced that this really is the end. After all Gibbs remembers that La Grenoille put the gun back on the desk in Jenny Shepards study before he left. But on the other hand why would Trent Kort step up and admit that he did it to protect the undercover operation if it was Jenny? There are still some questions that remain unanswered at this point.

Watching this episode just once doesn’t seem like it is enough, I have the feeling that there is a lot that I missed. And I am sure that I will at least watch it a couple more times. Though the storyline was very intense at the same time they kept that typical NCIS humor. That is what sets NCIS apart from other crime shows, most shows with the exception of Bones choose a serious view on crimes, profiling and finding clues. NCIS adds humor to the mix.
