"ER" Recap & Review - "Truth Will out"

ER
“Truth Will Out”

Original Air Date: April 24, 2008

The title of this weeks' episode, Truth Will Out, makes no sense to me. It should have been more along the lines of “Damage Control” because the major plot points all revolve around someone trying to fix something they have screwed up. There are two major and three minor story lines revolving around this idea of relationship repair.

The title of this weeks' episode, Truth Will Out, makes no sense to me. It should have been more along the lines of “Damage Control” because the major plot points all revolve around someone trying to fix something they have screwed up. There are two major and three minor story lines revolving around this idea of relationship repair.

Abby – In an episode from a couple of weeks ago, Abby went to Croatia and came clean with Kovac. I guess he was suppose to blame it all on her disease and be all happy that she was getting help. Oh, and he was supposed to forgive and forget. Unfortunately for Abby, it's not that easy. So she's trying – hard. She wants to talk about it. Kovac refuses. Typical man, if you ask me. But the fact that he was looking at the apartments in the newspaper isn't helping any. She's also got this problem at work. She feels like she is being judged. And how could she not? Sam doesn't hide the fact that she thinks Abby is a lush. Okay, maybe that's not what she thinks exactly, but Sam is not happy with Abby at all. Looking back, there's never been a time when Sam has been anything less than professional (at work, with patients) and I guess she holds everyone to those standards. In this episode, though, Abby redeems herself as a competent doctor by successfully delivering a baby in the ER and saving the life of both the mom and baby.

Kovac – His dad got sick a while ago, and he went back to Croatia to take care of him, remember? Well, in due course, his dad dies and Luka is left with a need to feel like it's okay if dying people die. So where does that land him? At a new job at a nursing home. While he is there for an interview, he gets the chance to chat it up with Walter Perkins (Hal Holbrook), who advises him to run far far away from that place. But I think Luka is already running away. He's running away from Abby, County General, and the need to fix everyone. And run away he does: at the end of the episode, he announces that he's moving out. Bummer, Abby.

Sam -- Granted, this is not a major story line this week, but because she looked so beautiful at the end of the episode, I felt it was worth mentioning. All episode long, she had been giving Gates a hard time for talking to her, looking at her, offering her a donut. “Sometimes a donut is just more than a donut.” He calls her out on it, and she fixes it. And looks amazing!

Pratt – He needs to fix things with Bettina. He wants to be there for her, but she won't let him in. He takes advice from Morris (of all people) and takes her a box of cupcakes. Interestingly, we are shown that he gets to her place and sits on the stoop, but he doesn't go in. I'd like to think that he gives it a try. Are cupcakes enough?

Neela – She has such a need to fix everything for all her patients that she gives one of them a drug to make him forget the cancer diagnosis he overhears so she can tell him again in a better way. Speaking of needing things, Neela needs something. What? A man? She's so lonely. She has no one to talk to, no one to cry to. She had all that in the super hot Dr. Ray Barnett, but now he's back in Baton Rouge with his mommy and no legs. Hey, I wouldn't be opposed to a field trip. How about it Neela, let's go see Ray.

A couple of other points of interest from tonight's show: We learn that Dr. Simon Brenner is Anspaugh's nephew. Of course, this only come out after some staffers complain about him to the chief. Oops. And Dubenko pretty much ruins anymore chances of polishing the desktop with Dr. Wexler when her accuses her of some psycho-babble stuff that I think translates into: “you're a slut.”

The best line from tonight's show comes from Abby upon being told about Dr. Brenner for the first time. “He thinks he's God's gift to medicine and women.” Abby replies: “Great, we can always use another one of those.”

So those are my thoughts. What did you think?

  6. Great recap. I love watching ER and am very sad if Luca and Abby are both leaving the show. If they leave the only one left to keep me watching the show is Neela, as I'm not too impressed with the other characters.

  8. According to some recent interviews, Abby and Luka will not be leaving the show until about halfway through next season (which will be about 16 episodes), although Luka will have less screen time now, obviously. So they have 9 or 10 more episodes to resolve their issues. And resolve they will! (Or so they are promising.)
