“Fishing vessel Wizard, 1200 nautical miles from Dutch Harbor”.

The beginning of the 4th season of the Discovery Channel’s ‘Deadliest Catch’ starts off strong. In the form of a prologue, you are immediately brought onboard Captain Keith Colburn’s vessel (run by his brother Monte) in the middle of a bad storm, with the crew running rampantly trying to batten down the hatches. (And hopefully repair the leaks that have occurred in the hull). Before you’re able to catch your breath, on comes Bon Jovi and your Captains for the season. Welcome back to the Bering Sea.

The beginning of the 4th season of the Discovery Channel’s ‘Deadliest Catch’ starts off strong. (And hopefully repair the leaks that have occurred in the hull). Before you’re able to catch your breath, on comes Bon Jovi and your Captains for the season. Welcome back to the Bering Sea.

    The Northwestern-

We say ‘hello’ to the Hansens again, and they introduce their new crest. Captain Sig wants to honor his relationship with his brothers and their legacy. Edgar discovers that the propeller shaft is damaged. They can’t launch right away as a result. After the rest of the fleet launches & heads to the fishing groumds, the Northwestern is still stuck in the harbor checking it’s repairs. At that time, Sig decides to pull out old archival maps of the fishing grounds. He decides to fish in a place that nobody else is fishing in. Edgar doesn’t seem to approve. Meanwhile, greenhorn Jake wants to prove to Sig and the crew that he is ready to make a full share by becoming a deckhand. The crew is not convinced he’s ready, and soon begin to tease him. When they are ready to launch, Jake is nowhere to be found. They start leave without him, but he makes it back on time. He was on the phone with a girl. Sig pipes up “That would have been an expensive piece of ***”. They start their season a day behind the rest.

    The Time Bandit-

Captain Jonathan welcomes his son Scott aboard for the season. He feels that Scott is the Hillstrand’s ‘only hope’ to carry on the fishing tradition of their family. They load a junk heap of an old truck on board. They are planning to play a joke on Captain Phil of the Cornelia Marie, who has been telling them he needs a new truck. The Hillstrands call their mother up, only to find out she’s had a premonition that this season will be a bad one for them.
Heading toward the fishing grounds, Jonathan has learned that the crab aren’t in large pockets as usual. He demonstrates his system of guess work, and it changes with each cup of coffee. They also find that the practical joke of having the junk truck on board has become an annoyance.

    The Cornelia Marie-

Captain Phil kicks off his season with a survival suit drill. His deckhand (and son) Jake decides to bring a new TV aboard, at his father’s expense. Phil is not happy when he hears the news. He says, “Now you know why lions eat their young”.
They launch along with the rest of the fleet.
Phil seems to be the first to pull a pot. The beginning of the season doesn’t look good with only 3 crab in the pot. After 12 hours and an 8 pot string, they only came up with 7 total crab. The next morning’s prospect string reveals the same results. Phil has never been held without crab in this area, and this causes concern.

    The Wizard-

Captain Monte is introduced plugging up a hole in the hull, which was caused by a 40’ rogue wave. This occurred on the journey from Seattle to Dutch Harbor. (And was the teaser of this episode). This season, the Wizard brought on two Greenhorns. One of them is particularly concerning to the veteran crew. After launching, Captain Keith shares some of his rituals. For instance, he never does paperwork and he needs his cup of noodles before a pot gets dropped. Unfortunately, they can’t find a cup of noodles for him. Since he uses the cup as a spittoon, he’s offered a different cup. But he ultimately refuses. They have to drop pots without Keith’s lucky talisman.

The 4th season starts out solid. All of the Captains and most of their crew are so familiar now, they are like any fictional character you get comfortable with. They are obviously painting this season as a cursed one with all of the breaks in superstition. During the prayer at the launch of the fleet, the speaker went dead and that seemed to have made them all uneasy.
During the Captain’s toast, they made a bet that the best string of 25 would win 100 bucks from each of the losers. There was a weird edit during the toast. They slowed down the Captain’s laughter after a joke during a memoriam for lost fisherman. It reminded me of the end of Rosemary’s Baby. It was kind of creepy. However, it didn’t affect the impact of the first show. I’m hooked. (Ouch).
