Winter has come to Springfield, and of course Homer refused to pay the heating bill, so the Simpsons are huddled around the fireplace burning things to keep warm. Everything is going into the fire, magazines, wool socks and winter parkas. Marge’s memory box almost goes up in smoke, but she saves it and the flashback (which pretty much rewrites the entire history of the Simpsons) commences.

Marge was applied to college at Springfield University in the 1990s. She and Homer were dating and living in a very Melrose Place building – along with one Julius Hibbert and Kirk and Luanne Van Houten (before they were married but that doesn’t mean Luanne’s not already stepping out behind Kirk’s back). Homer was in a smooth jazz boy band with Lenny, Carl and Lou the cop. Homer was against her going to college, even when he thought she just meant applying herself to making a collage.

In order to pay for Marge’s school, Homer goes crawling back to his father’s Laser Tag warehouse/battlefield, where he begs for a job. The kids hate Homer and they all gang up and beat him with their Laser Tag guns. While Homer toils away in the Laser Tag mines, Marge has the time of her life over at Springfield U, thanks mostly to her handsome Professor August.

Homer goes on a Seinfeld rant while Marge reads her People’s History of the United States (see Good Will Hunting). Oh Elaine, will you ever find anyone who’s spongeworthy? Homer wants to get all Zima’d up and have Marge rub salve on his Laser Tag burns (the kids found out that if they all concentrated their beams on Homer they could create an actual laser).

Marge and Professor August are growing closer and Homer discovers them together at his office. He goes on to create grunge rock with his band Sadgasm and there’s the obligatory nod to Back to the Future where Kurt Cobain’s cousin calls him to let him hear the “new sound.” Weird Al Yankovic even does a parody of one of Sadgams’s songs called Brainfreeze.

Homer and Marge split up but Marge finds out that Professor August opposes marriage and then she’s done with his pompous ass. Homer makes a music video of his song “Margerine,” which is kind of strange since it is a Bush (the band not the presidents) parody and Homer has been channeling Nirvana the whole time but I’m not asking questions. Kurt Loder has a voice cameo for Mtv News about Sadgams breaking up due to Homer’s narcotics addiction. Marge rushes to his side and yoinks the needle from his arm – which turned out to be Insulin. Homer got diabetes from drinking too many Frappacinos.

  2. Please, does anyone know the artist and name of the song in this episode's soundtrack?

(90's symphonic sounding affair, very popular as I recall, not the grunge Homer was playing.)

    Many Thanks!
