  1. Golden Globes

Glenn Close brought home the award for best performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama for her knockout portrayal of Patty Hewes. Expect a repeat at the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards.

Damages itself failed to win the best dramatic series award, but it was easy to swallow losing to AMC’s Mad Men. Losing to something like Grey’s Anatomy would be so much worse. Although I haven’t followed Mad Men (it’s about Madison Avenue advertising in the fifties, I believe), I hear a lot of good things about it, both as a period piece and a character drama.

Rose Byrne and Ted Danson faced an uphill battle, and the inconsistency of the categories was the chief problem. In every other category, the Hollywood Foreign Press is careful to separate comedies from dramas. In this category, though, they just kind of throw their hands up and walk away. It doesn’t stop there. The HFP also opens this category to miniseries, which really limits the choices.

This would be like Glenn Close competing against Tina Fey and Queen Latifah, each of whom earned honors. Or Steve Carell going up against James Gandolfini. It’s a definite credibility stretch, and the kind of thing that makes me avoid award shows altogether. Still, the cliché holds true: If you can make it through all that congestion, than yes, it is an honor just to be nominated.

So Ted Danson loses to Jeremy Piven for Entourage, while Rose Byrne loses to Samantha Morton for HBO’s miniseries Longford.

Let’s hope the Emmys follow suit with their nominations. Although they haven’t always followed the Globes’ lead, most notably when Linda Fiorentino won Best Actress for The Last Seduction. The Oscars deemed her ineligible, since the film was made for HBO and then released to the theaters. Ah, well…If they’re thinking more about this than settling the strike or brainstorming season two, it’s more trouble than it’s worth. Smile politely and applaud casually, just like 90% of the audience.

    DVD Release

Season One of Damages hits the shelves on Tuesday, January 29. According to tvshowsondvd.com, the DVD or Blu-ray sets will contain all 13 episodes (natch), accompanied by Behind-the-Scenes Featurettes, Interactive Timeline, Civil Law Handbook, and a wicked cool shot on the box cover. Really. That’s the only phrase that fits. I tried dozens. Wicked cool. Hit the website and you’ll see for yourself.
