Dan Vasser (Kevin McKidd) wakes up wearing a Halloween mask. It’s 1987 and Ah Ha is blasting on the radio. Two kids are about to shoot off a homemade rocket from their fire escape and Vasser saves the brothers just as their rocket explodes.

Back in the present it’s Halloween and Katie has to cover for Dan being missing by saying he went out for some ice. Her ex-boyfriend, Dan’s brother the cop is ultra-suspicious and starts looking through the Vasser’s mail for unpaid bills and the like. He thinks Dan is gambling and doing drugs again, but Vasser shows up with the ice and they take off to trick or treat with the kid.

The next day Katie, the ex-television news reporter, is having lunch with Dan’s boss. She wants to get back into the business and he agrees to talk to his friend over at the tv station.

Vasser digs up some old stories about one of the boys who blew up the rocket and he’s been a very bad boy and man. He Quantum Leaps again and this time stops the same two boys from stealing a car. Livia (Mood Bloodgood) shows up and they talk about Leaping and Jack’s spending the money he got from last week and eventually they watch as young Dan and young Jack Vassser pass them in the street. Nobody says anything to anyone though which is kind of lame since all the promos for the show made it look like Dan was going to say something to himself in the past.

Jack apparently wasn’t satisfied with looking through the mail. He’s made some calls to Dan’s credit card companies and bank to see if his brother is gambling again. Or is it to try and discredit Dan so he can get Katie back? Hmmmm.

Vasser’s editor gives him a confidential file he’s been holding. One of the two boys he’s been investiaging in the present and helping out in the past is suspected of being a uni-bomber-esque serial bomber. Vasser reads an old story about two people that were killed when a bomb went off at an oil company in 2000. Vasser calls the older brother and interviews him. He’s been on the straight and narrow since Dan stopped him from stealing the car on his last leap. So he’s not the criminal he was originally going to become. His brother, on the other hand, has disappeared.

Vasser jumps again and he’s in 2000, right before the bomb is supposed to explode. He steals his brother’s car (some vintage number that Jack was complaining about having to spend $500 on a part for earlier in the show) and clears the oil company building before the bomb goes off. So he’s saved the lives of the two people that were going to be killed.

Katie is home making a demo tape for the tv station and Jack busts in and tells her that he’s certain that Dan is gambling again and that he cares about her. She doesn’t take it well and he storms off.

2000, Vasser convinces the guy to tell him where his brother is. The two go to track him down. They find him building another bomb, which he threatens to detonate. Dan talks him down by telling him the truth about being from the future and being a time traveler.
Then, on the way to return his brother’s car, Livia shows up and they overhear Jack and Katie talking. She’s telling Jack that she’s going to marry Dan and that she’s pregnant and Jack vows to always be there for her.

Back in the present, Jack shows up to apologize. All his investigations into their financial records has turned up no evidence of any suspicious transactions. After the apology Dan gives him a brand new version of the car part he was looking for. Another great benefit of being a time traveler if you know someone who works on vintage automobiles!

Over at the Chronicle, Jack meets with the younger brother, now a reformed man. He turned himself in for the oil company bombing and he’s been rehabilitated. He’s been doing a lot of research on time travel and he’s come to the conclusion that time travel isn’t possible and that he was just troubled back in 2000 when Jack found him. He doesn’t believe that Vasser was really a time traveler. Another strong episode, although they didn’t advance the story of what Livia is doing shadowing Vasser on all his leaps into the past. 3.5 stars out of 5 stars.
