Is every episode based on a party? Blair and company are headed to a masquerade ball. The show opens on a gopher. No not an actual gopher, Blair’s gopher, Jenny. Jenny runs around town to pick up Blair’s outfit for the party. Blair and Serena talk excessively about Dan and Nate and the ball. Dan receives a call from an old flame named Vanessa who surprises him at his apartment. Serena calls Dan in the meantime to ask him to the ball. In the background, Serena overhears Vanessa. Dan lies and says its Jenny, just as Jenny arrives at Blair’s room to drop off her dress. Uh-oh Dan is busted and Serena needs a new date!

Dan and Vanessa decide on a movie to see. They make small talk about something cryptic that happened between them the year before. Nate and Chuck chat about Nate’s father’s mysterious money problems he learned about a few weeks back. Unexpectedly, Nate finds cocaine in his father’s bookshelf. Blair and her minions try to figure out who Serena’s date should be. Jenny returns Blair’s outfit hoping she will get an invite…it doesn’t happen. Blair, in a condescending voice, says that no freshman are allowed. “Oh honey no…” she says. I, in the meantime, want to smack her for that tone of voice. We’ve all heard someone treat us that way. Serena gets an IM from a guy she doesn’t know who seems to be a friend of Serena. She invites him to the ball.

Nate feeling confused by the drugs, goes to Serena for someone to talk to. She makes him feel better and he leaves. Vanessa and Rufus talk about Dan. Vanessa confesses she wants Dan back. Dan moments later calls her to cancel their plans and heads off to the ball. Jenny heads home to find Vanessa. Jenny complains about being Blair’s slave. Vanessa suggests she goes to the ball and has a good time for all her hard work. As Dan arrives at the party he puts his mask on and lies to the bodyguard at the door to get in. Bad boy Dan! Jenny enters the ball in awe of her surroundings. Dan sees Serena dancing with IM Boy and is visibly crushed.

Chuck notices Jenny and asks her to dance. In a bold move, she wants to go somewhere with him. IM Boy is so dull it’s scary and I’m not the only one who notices it. Serena leaves immediately and finds Dan. Jenny begins toying with Chuck obviously as a pay back for harassing her in the pilot. She tells him she wants to play hide-and-seek. Dan tries to explain to Serena what she overheard on the phone. Serena believes Vanessa is just a friend and they kiss. As they pull apart, there’s a reveal of Vanessa. She is upset, thinking she might have had a chance with Dan.

Vanessa is angry that Dan lied to her. Vanessa storms off and in an odd move Dan runs after her. Jenny leads Chuck to the roof and gets him in his underwear. She takes his clothes and locks him up there. Serena runs into Jenny who gives her a pep talk. “Dan would follow you anywhere…” she says. After the party, Dan and Serena meet up. Dan mentions again that he likes only her. Back at Dan’s apartment, Vanessa is waiting. Dan is happy to see her. They apologize to each other wanting to start their friendship over. In a fade out they begin to gab like teenagers over what’s been happening in their lives.
